👉Impostor syndrome is the feeling that you don’t belong in the life you’ve worked hard to build.

Trauma and chronic shame can intensify those feelings — making peace, success, & stability harder to trust.

During PTSD Awareness Month, we recognize that healing is not just about surviving what happened.

It’s about learning to believe you are safe enough, worthy enough AND whole enough to stay.

At Sojourn House, we walk alongside women in that quiet work of rebuilding.

Case management is where healing gets practical.

Behind every one of the 150 outreach case management sessions completed by Sojourn House in 2025 was a woman facing immediate needs, hard decisions, and often crisis.

These sessions are where positive change is put into action.

Emergency housing.
Substance use treatment.
Transportation.
Food and clothing.
Identification.
Mental health and medical care.

But more than resources, case management is about relationship.

It’s about meeting women where they are, building trust, and walking alongside them as they take their next steps toward safety, stability, and healing.

Because recovery doesn’t happen in isolation.
It happens one step, one decision, and one connection at a time.

Trafficking doesn’t always start with force. Sometimes it starts with “I love you.”

Not in dark alleyways.
Not always with strangers.
But in relationships. In homes. In families. In intimacy.

Contrary to common misconceptions, trafficking rarely starts with abduction. More often, it begins through grooming — through emotional connection, financial dependence, manipulation & betrayal by someone the victim knows and trusts.

That’s part of why trafficking remains so underreported.
Because when exploitation is tied to love, family, or survival, it can be incredibly difficult to identify — and even harder to name.

At Sojourn House, we understand that healing from trafficking isn’t just about escaping harm. It’s about untangling the emotional bonds, grief & survival patterns left behind.

Our work creates space for women to process those realities safely, rebuild trust, and begin again.🕊️

For those of us who are working hard to create safety, stability & a different future, healing doesn't end when the crisis is over.

Sometimes the hardest work happens quietly.

It's learning to trust your judgment.
To trust your feelings.
To trust that you deserve the life you're building.

External safety doesn't automatically create internal peace.

Healing isn't only about changing our circumstances.
It's also about learning to feel at home within ourselves again.🏠

At Sojourn House, we walk alongside women as they navigate this often unseen part of the healing journey. Through community, support & trauma-informed care, women are given space to rebuild trust, discover their strengths & move toward lasting freedom.

At Sojourn House, transparency is one of our core values because trust matters. We are committed to being open about our mission, finances, and impact as we work to defend, restore, and liberate women who have been exploited and trafficked. That's why our annual reports are available for anyone to review.

Traffickers don't rely on a single app or website. 📲

Recruitment has been reported across a wide range of online platforms, including social media, messaging apps, and dating sites.

Why? Because traffickers often go where people already are.

Understanding the tactics used to exploit vulnerability is an important part of prevention. The more we know, the better equipped we are to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities.

Complex PTSD can develop when trauma becomes a way of life. Learn More👇

When trauma is ongoing, survival becomes second nature.

Over time, that can affect how a person sees themselves, trusts others, responds to stress, and builds relationships.

This is often the reality of Complex PTSD.

At Sojourn House, we work with women whose experiences have been shaped by years of trauma, exploitation, and survival. Our role is to provide a safe place where healing can begin.

Because survival is not the end of the story. 🕊️

Healing is possible. đź’›

Human trafficking is evolving, and so are the ways people are targeted.

Awareness is one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent exploitation and support survivors. That's why we're sharing this important information from Polaris.

Human trafficking doesn’t only start in person. Today, many situations begin online.
Traffickers use mainstream social media and dating apps to find, target, and manipulate people.

June is PTSD Awareness Month.

Approximately 1 in 10 women will experience PTSD in their lifetime.*

PTSD is often misunderstood as something that only affects people immediately after a traumatic event. In reality, it can impact daily life long after the threat is gone.

It may look like:
-anxiety
-difficulty relaxing
-emotional numbness
-overthinking
-trouble sleeping
-irritability
-constantly preparing for worst-case scenarios.

For many of us, these responses feel like weaknesses. In reality, they are survival strategies that once helped us keep going.

🏠This month, we're creating space for conversations around trauma, healing, and the often invisible work of recovery.

Because many people are carrying more than we can see.

With love in our hearts and tears in our eyes, we say farewell to our beloved intern, Stephanie Heidemann! She has completed a two-semester internship with us, as she works toward her Master's degree in mental health counseling and music therapy. We are going to miss her tremendously, but we are so grateful to add a new member to our sisterhood. We have a feeling she might come back to visit from time to time. đź’—

Stephanie jumped right on board with our mission last August, starting with creating a weekly group, "Mindfulness Mondays," where she led us in healing practices, such as breathwork, yoga, voice yoga, and mindfulness. She pushed us out of our comfort zones and showed us the power of using our voices. Women who have been through extensive trauma often have a hard time speaking up, claiming their voice, and owning the beauty of what's inside. It's been incredibly healing to follow Stephanie's lead in practicing a kind of togetherness that is like a balm for the soul. We will continue this group in the community so that women in our outreach program can participate. 🙌🏻

Stephanie also provided one-on-one expressive arts and wellness sessions for our residents, giving them a safe space to feel, explore, heal, and accomplish goals. Sometimes they explored music together; other times they engaged in things like working on a puzzle, sharing a cup of coffee and conversation, or taking a walk. It's the relationship-building that truly matters: slowing down, processing trauma, and doing the hard work of healing from experiences like exploitation, addiction, and abuse. Stephanie has been instrumental in deepening our safe space of healing. đź«‚

Other programs Stephanie added to her repertoire at Sojourn House include bringing mindfulness practices into our weekly jail educational program, teaching coping tools for nervous system and emotion regulation. She was also able to bring her one-on-one sessions to ladies in our outreach program.

We are truly thankful for Stephanie's time, energy, and willingness to learn alongside Sojourn House. That's how we love to do it - learn, grow, and heal together. If you're interested in volunteering or becoming an intern to impact the lives of women who are becoming empowered after exploitation and trafficking, reach out to [email protected] to learn more.

Thank you, Stephanie!! So much love to you as you continue your journey of learning and helping others heal.

For women, for freedom.
