Our CASA family is heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend and longtime volunteer advocate, Jean Thornton.

For 18 years, Jean gave her time and heart to Court Advocates for Children. She advocated 12 children, and her care reached throughout our program. From fundraising and training to mentoring new advocates, Jean was always willing to help.

Jean believed in showing up for children and making sure their voices were heard. We are so grateful for the difference she made and the example she set for all of us.

Please keep her daughter, Kristin Shaw, her granddaughters who lit up her life, and her loving husband, Gary Thornton, in your hearts.

We will miss you dearly, Jean. Thank you for being part of our CASA family.

Today, we proudly recognize and celebrate Debbie Cernick for her many years of dedicated service to Court Advocates for Children for Kittitas County, both as a CASA volunteer and as a valued member of our Board of Directors.

Debbie's commitment, leadership, and generosity of time and talent has helped strengthen our organization and advance our mission of advocating for the best interests of children who have experienced abuse and neglect. Her willingness to serve, share knowledge, and support our work has made a lasting impact on our organization and the children and families we serve.

For a child in foster care, having one consistent adult who gets to know them, listens to them, and advocates for their best interests can be incredibly important.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) are trained to ask questions, gather information, build relationships, and bring an independent perspective to the court.

If you’ve been thinking about becoming a CASA, our next volunteer training starts in October! There’s still time to learn more and decide if CASA is right for you.

You don’t need a special degree, a background in social work, or years of experience to become a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).

CASAs get to know the child they’re assigned to and learn about what’s happening in their life. They talk with the child, parents, caregivers, social workers, teachers, doctors, therapists, and others involved in the child’s care. They gather information, ask questions, and put the pieces together so they can understand what the child needs and share that perspective with the court.

We provide the training and ongoing support. You bring your time, your curiosity, and your willingness to learn.

So, what does a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) actually do?

A CASA gets to know the child they’re assigned to and the people involved in that child’s life. They visit the child, gather information, stay informed about what’s happening, and bring an independent perspective to the court.

A CASA isn’t expected to have all the answers. They’re there to listen, learn, show up, and speak up for the child’s best interests.

It’s a meaningful commitment, but you don’t have to figure it out on your own. We provide training and ongoing support to help you become a CASA.

A CASA volunteer gets to know a child, listens to what they have to say, learns about their circumstances, and speaks up for what they need.

You don’t have to be a lawyer or have experience in social services. We provide the training and support — you bring your time, your willingness to learn, and your commitment to a child.
