There aren’t many mornings when we gather in high-visibility green, complete with hard hats and eye protection—in fact, this may have been our first—but given how well it went, we hope it won’t be our last. Our visit to Central Washington University’s newest facility, the North Academic Complex (NAC), was truly impressive. From the warm wood finishes and open atrium to the inviting study spaces, natural light, and sweeping views, every detail reflected thoughtful design, a focus on student needs, the use of local resources, and a commitment to creating a space of genuine beauty. Well done!
Central Washington University is constructing a geothermal plant to heat and cool the North Academic Complex (NAC) and several other buildings, with completion anticipated in spring 2026. The system includes a well that draws from the Ellensburg Aquifer beneath campus. By harnessing geothermal energy, the university expects to significantly reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. In addition to its environmental benefits, the plant will serve as a hands-on learning tool for CWU students. While led by the university, the project reflects collaboration among multiple agencies and partner organizations working together to ensure its success.
