Please join the CWU Muslim Student Association and the CWU Museum of Culture & Environment at 5:30 PM on Weds. May 19 in order to celebrate the Bean Pie, an important culinary tradition that is part of the Muslim experience in the U.S.
During the 1930s, the Nation of Islam made the very first bean pie in order to establish a unique culinary and cultural identity that broke away from the sweet potato pie, which was associated with slavery. In this event, we will hear from Slate journalist Aymann Ismail, who has examined the bean pie in a short film. We will also have an opportunity to eat bean pies made by Abu’s Homestyle Bakery, located in Brooklyn New York.
This in-person event will take place in the SURC Theatre and will follow all COVID-19 safety guidelines (masking, social distancing, sanitation). It is an opportunity to join together, learn about and celebrate Muslim American culture, and enjoy a tasty part of American history!
