The Bridger Antelope Trap is a unique archaeological site in southwest Wyoming believed to have been constructed by Indians, of the late prehistoric and early historic periods, who used the trap to hunt large numbers of pronghorn antelope. During hunts, the goal was to drive a herd into the entrance wing of the trap and haze them toward the trap enclosure located on the slope and crest of a ridge. Once within the trap, a corral constructed of stacked juniper wood, the animals were driven until exhaustion and were then killed by hunters. The trap construction took advantage of a characteristic of pronghorn , who generally do not attempt to jump over a barrier. The trap site is one of the few remaining examples of this method of prehistoric and historic food procurement. A recent study of the tree ring sequences from the juniper wood found at the trap indicates that the site was in use at least 300 years ago, and remained in use into the late 1800s.
