California Trail Heritage Alliance

California Trail Heritage Alliance The California Trail Center Foundation works with the community and our partners to enhance the values of the California Trail Interpretive Center.

Our Alliance was initially established as the California Trail Center Foundation to ensure the completion of the California Trail Interpretive Center and its' exhibits in Elko, Nevada. With the completion of the Sutter's Fort exhibit in 2014, the Trail Center has been in full operation. Our mission has evolved to enhance the California Trail experience for our community, the public and future gene

rations. We support the educational and interpretive activities at the California Trail Interpretive Center and promote the protection and preservation of the national historic California Trail for present and future generations. Our Board of Directors includes a voting core of 9 primarily local individuals and a nonvoting cadre of 8 folks who have expertise, interest and involvement with some aspect of the national historic California Trail. Our Alliance meets monthly and works closely with the Bureau of Land Management who operates the California Trail Interpretive Center in Elko, Nevada. We work closely with our many partners including the City and County of Elko, the State of Nevada, the Great Basin Institute and the Southern Nevada Conservancy, the Oregon-California Trial Association, Trails West, and Humboldt Highroad.

Churning Butter
The wagon trains headed west toward the Pacific Ocean
between 1841 and 1869 had to make due with supplies they carried along on the journey. There were no stores along the route, which took about 3 months, traveling an average of 10 to 12 miles per day. If your family was able to bring a cow on the trip, you could churn the cream into butter and bake a loaf of homemade bread or biscuits.
