Nevada's wild horses are now estimated at more than THREE TIMES the federal limit — and the fight over what to do about it is intensifying on the range.

We sat down with multi-generation ranchers watching springs dry up, wildlife biologists tracking habitat changes, and advocates with American Wild Horse Conservation who say the real problem is livestock, not horses — and that fertility control, not roundups, is the answer.

BLM's own March 2026 numbers: 42,572 wild horses and burros in Nevada, with a high Appropriate Management Level of 12,811. In one herd area south of Battle Mountain, BLM estimates 2,430 horses where the high AML is 100.

Seven Nevada counties have declared emergencies. The BLM's wild horse budget has grown to $142 million annually. And the debate over fertility control vs. removals vs. euthanasia is reaching a breaking point.

Earlier this week, Nevada Cattlemen’s Association leadership had the opportunity to meet with Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and Governor Joe Lombardo to discuss the importance of public lands grazing in Nevada. Key topics included wild horse management, Nevada’s sovereignty over its water, the role of grazing in wildfire prevention and rehab, flexible grazing practices, and the reauthorization of suspended AUMs.

A big thank you to Secretary Burgum, Governor Lombardo, and Nevada Department of Agriculture Director J.J. Goicoechea for recognizing the importance of the hardworking ranchers who help steward our state’s lands and resources.

Public lands ranchers called, and the agencies answered. ✅

At today's signing of the USDA-DOI MOU on grazing lands, PLC ranchers thanked U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Rollins and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum for delivering on the roadmap we set out on day 1 of this administration: reform onerous regulations, restore access to forage, and remove barriers to ranchers' stewardship of 250 million acres of public land.

The MOU is the product of years of work PLC has done with the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to:
✅ incorporate grazing in Shared Stewardship Agreements
✅ facilitate rancher-agency discussions to improve relationships
✅ inventory and offer vacant allotments for new grazing permits
✅ increase the use of technology and innovative tools to conduct monitoring and manage grazing
✅ use grazing as a front line tool for fire prevention

Huge thanks to the agencies for taking this important step - the best is yet to come.
