The story of Communities In Schools began in the 1970s, when Founder Bill Milliken, then a youth advocate in New York City, came up with the idea of bringing community resources inside a public school building – where they are accessible, coordinated and accountable. In the span of a little more than 30 years, Communities In Schools has become the nation’s leading dropout prevention organization. We have a unique model that positions a coordinator inside schools to assess needs and deliver necessary resources that remove barriers to success. Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Our network is comprised of nearly 5,000 passionate professionals in 25 states and the District of Columbia. We serve the most vulnerable students in the most dropout-prone school districts, nearly 1.3 million young people in more than 3,400 schools. We are actively engaged with policy makers, school staff, parents and business partners to ensure that Communities In Schools’ services are extended to as many K-12 students as possible and that those students have access to college. Independent research demonstrates that Communities In Schools is one of a very few organizations proven to keep students in school and the only one to document that it increases graduation rates. The study also shows that a higher percentage of students served by Communities In Schools reach proficiency in 4th-grade and 8th-grade reading and math.

Meet Maricruz! 🌟

Maricruz is starting her 5th year at Communities In Schools and is our Site Coordinator at West Wendover High School.

She loves being able to build connections with students and support them as they develop new skills that will hopefully stay with them into adulthood.

Outside of work, Maricruz enjoys gardening and spending time with her family. 🌱💙

Meet Valeria and Odessa! ✨

Valeria and Odessa are both in their first year as Site Coordinators with Communities In Schools at Adobe Middle School!

Valeria loves the open-mindedness of the staff at Adobe. She appreciates how everyone is constantly reflecting and willing to create new ways to help students succeed. She loves that there is a shared belief that they are all there for the students, creating a warm environment that students can look forward to coming to each day.

Odessa loves the unity at Adobe and how everyone looks out for one another.

Outside of work, Valeria enjoys spending time with her loved ones, making small crafts, and biking or going for walks when the sun is shining. Odessa enjoys practicing yoga and spending time in nature. 🌿

We are so excited to have Valeria and Odessa at Adobe Middle School and can't wait to see all the great things they do and the impact they make this year! 💙

🎬 Join us in Wells for a FREE community film showing!

Join us Friday, October 9th at the Boys & Girls Club of Wells for an evening focused on supporting teens and the choices they face in today’s digital age.

🎥 Film Showing: 5:30–6:30 PM
🎟️ Free and open to community members!

We’ll be showing Screenagers: Under the Influence, a film that explores teens’ decisions around va**ng, drugs, and alcohol. The film shares research and personal experiences while offering solutions to help empower teens and the adults who support them.

Come early at 5:00 PM to visit resource booths, connect with local organizations, and learn about resources available in our community. Then stay for the film beginning at 5:30 PM!

A big thank you to CareSource of Nevada for presenting this event! We’re excited to partner with CareSource and PACE Coalition to bring this important conversation to the Wells community. 💙

🌟 Meet Preslie and Veronica! 🌟

Preslie is starting her third year at CIS and Veronica is starting her 6th year, and they are our Site Coordinators at Elko High School!

Preslie loves that her school has so much school spirit. “I love the school spirit. All of our staff love to get involved and show their pride for our school. Whether that be by wearing maroon on Thursdays or going all out for spirit weeks. One of my favorite things is to watch the student section during football and basketball games. It's awesome to see the kids having fun while cheering on their friends.”

Veronica says, “What I love most about Elko High School is the incredible sense of community and school pride. This is my 6th year at EHS, so it's safe to say I truly love being here! I'm grateful to work alongside such amazing staff and look forward to all the school events throughout the year.”

Outside of work, Preslie likes napping, coloring, spending time with her goddaughter Paysleigh, and camping.

Veronica says, “I love spending quality time with my kids, whether we're playing games, baking cookies, having cozy movie nights, or learning new things together. In my quiet free time, you'll usually find me reading a good book or unwinding with one of my go-to comfort shows like One Tree Hill or Gossip Girl!”

✨Meet Rowena and Tricia! ✨

Rowena has been with Communities In Schools for 8 years, and Tricia for 4 years with CIS. Together, they are our Site Coordinators at Spring Creek High School!

Rowena loves seeing how the teachers, counselors, administration, and CIS come together to support students. She says, “It’s heartwarming to see everyone working as a team, sharing a common goal of helping each student feel supported, valued, and given every opportunity to succeed.”

Tricia says Spring Creek High School is a wonderful school and loves how the teachers pay attention to the details and truly care about the well-being of each student.

Outside of work, Tricia enjoys traveling and spending time with family. Rowena loves spending time with her family, being outdoors, enjoying nature, and staying active. She also has a passion for making drums, which gives her a creative way to express herself and connect with something she truly enjoys.

Meet Allie! ✨

Allie is in her first year with Communities In Schools and is our Site Coordinator at Flag View Intermediate.

Allie loves how welcoming and friendly the entire staff at Flag View has been. She says, “Everyone has welcomed me and makes it easy to support students.”

Outside of work, Allie enjoys going on walks, spending time with her friends and family, and sewing.

Meet Anay! ☀️

Anay is starting her third year with Communities In Schools and is our Site Coordinator at West Wendover Middle School. She is also the very first Site Coordinator at WWMS!

One thing Anay loves about her school is seeing the staff become more comfortable with having Communities In Schools involved and recognizing the additional support and resources we can provide to students. She appreciates being able to help connect students with the resources they need and support them along the way.

Outside of work, Anay enjoys spending time with her family and going on runs with her dog.

Joana has been with Communities In Schools for 7 years and is our Site Coordinator at West Wendover Elementary.

Joanna loves that she is continually inspired by how the school staff collaborates to set students up for success. She says, “It is wonderful to witness teachers who are deeply invested in their students’ well-being and always advocate for what is best for them.”

Outside of work, Joanna is dedicated to her family and faith. She loves supporting her children at all their activities, staying active through jogging, and unwinding with reading and camping.

One of the things Jenny loves most about Sage is how welcoming everyone is. She describes it as such a loving environment that feels like a family. The staff truly cares about their students and always wants the best for them.
