The Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area (AFNHA) is a regional, grassroots effort to integrate central Appalachian forest history, culture, natural history, products, and forestry management into a heritage tourism initiative to promote rural community development. Initially supported by a 4-year grant from USDA to West Virginia University (WVU) Division of Forestry and Extension Service, the

effort is now implemented by a non-profit organization based on stakeholder partnerships. The goal is to create a sustainable Heritage Area based on forest heritage. Existing and potential forest-based historic sites, artisans, manufacturers, and working forests are being developed into a network of attractions providing high-quality products, programs, educational experiences, events, and visitor services. Were you disappointed to miss the West Virginia Historic Preservation Conference in May? Good news! We're offering some of the conference seminars as free webinars this summer.

Mark your calendars for Monday, July 27th at 12:00 pm ET to attend "Design, Society, and the Recent Past: Evaluating Modern Architecture at West Virginia University"

This panel originates in work that West Virginia (WVU) students and their professor, Dr. Michael Allen, have worked on across two past semesters - a series of projects evaluating National Register of Historic Places eligibility for works of modern architecture on WVU campus built in the 1960s and 1970s. While the last campus buildings to enter the National Register were listed in 1985 and built in 1921, the historic resources of WVU's post-World War II expansion have now become old enough that the question of their eligibility is ripe. Some buildings like the iconic Brutalist-style Coliseum (1970), have architectural significance established in scholarly and professional sources. This webinar reports on work in progress toward National Register listings for several buildings on campus.

Panelists: Dr. Michael Allen, Jamie Billman and Treasure Barberich-Wyckoff (Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area and WVU Alumni)
