Volunteer Review: Morveen – Dental Student from University of Dundee, Scotland
A Broader View Volunteers (ABV) | Kathmandu, Nepal Dental Program

Morveen, a dental student at the University of Dundee in Scotland, shares why she is an excellent fit for the ABV Nepal Kathmandu dental volunteer program:

“I would make a good volunteer for ABV because I am passionate about learning about dental care, health resources and clinical workings within Nepal. As well as gaining a better understanding of Nepalese healthcare and using my skills to volunteer within a local dental clinic, I am also interested in experiencing the local culture and immersing myself within the community. I am good at prioritising, making sure situations are dealt with in the appropriate manner and correct order whilst remaining calm and level headed to make appropriate decisions.”

This placement places dental students and pre-dental volunteers in a large dental hospital in Kathmandu that serves poor, marginalized, and underserved communities. Volunteers work under local registered dentists, assist with common procedures (scaling, fillings, extractions, and more), and take part in community outreach at schools, orphanages, and monasteries focused on oral health education.

Living with a Host Family & Changing Lives at a Youth Center in Xela, Guatemala | ABV Volunteer Review

My volunteer experience with A Broader View Volunteers (ABV) in Xela, Guatemala centered on authentic daily living with a warm and supportive host family. From the first day I felt genuinely welcomed into their home, with a private room, running water, potable water, an indoor restroom, and keys to the house and gate. Meals were thoughtfully prepared around my preferences, coffee was always available, and the family created a safe, respectful space where I could rest, share conversations, and feel completely accepted. This living arrangement gave me the stability and cultural immersion I needed to thrive during my time in Quetzaltenango.

The core of my service was the meaningful work at the local youth center. I facilitated Social Emotional Learning (SEL) workshops with the young people, watched their engagement and confidence grow, and built real connections through daily interactions. I also led professional development sessions with the staff, including clinical rounds training that helped them apply new strategies to their women’s empowerment program. Seeing the director’s consistent care for every child and the team’s commitment to the community made the work deeply rewarding and confirmed why supporting youth in Guatemala through A Broader View Volunteers matters.

My unforgettable volunteer experience with A Broader View Volunteers (ABV) in Xela, Guatemala

I just completed my short-term volunteer service with A Broader View Volunteers in Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala, and it exceeded every expectation. The in-country ABV coordinators were outstanding. They helped me figure out meaningful travel experiences I never could have arranged on my own while balancing my work schedule. Thanks to them I kayaked on Lake Atitlán in Panajachel right at the foot of volcanoes over a sunken civilization, visited the Fuentes de Georgina natural hot springs, and even connected with a local cooking class to learn how to make traditional jocom so I can share it with youth and family back home. When the earthquake made planned ruins trips unsafe, they quickly reconfigured everything around my interests. That kind of responsive, personal support made all the difference.

My host family was a true highlight. From the moment I arrived they welcomed me warmly and consistently. I had a private room with a door I could close, running water, potable water, an indoor restroom, keys to the gate and house, and meals thoughtfully planned around my preferences (plus coffee with every meal). They knew I am gay, asked about my husband and family in the States without judgment, and made me feel completely safe and accepted. We shared conversations. Compared with my earlier Peace Corps service years ago, this felt far more supportive and restorative. I would 100% recommend this host family to future ABV volunteers.

The heart of the experience was working with the youth and staff at the center. Watching the kids light up during the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) activities I prepared, receiving spontaneous hugs, and seeing the staff move from quiet listening into practical questions during clinical rounds training was powerful. The director’s genuine, nurturing way with every young person reminded me why this work matters. Those connections, combined with kayaking under the volcanoes, became the perfect capstone.

Transportation in Xela was my biggest practical challenge (I got lost more than once trying to master the buses and rotunda transfers). I pivoted to Uber so I could arrive on time and stay focused on the youth and workshops. My advice for future volunteers: stay open to new experiences and different ways of doing things, follow local customs, bring a small gift for your host family and counterpart organization, prepare your materials in advance but remain flexible, and take the language and cultural immersion training seriously. It is your utility belt.

ABV USA support before travel was solid—written plans and a personal airport-to-host-home handoff from Sra. Alejandra helped a lot. I plan to keep partnering with A Broader View Volunteers for future childcare and youth programs that include SEL components, and I’m happy to speak with anyone considering a placement.

Benjamin from the University of Dundee Dental School completes his Pre-Dental / Dentistry Elective in Kathmandu, Nepal with A Broader View Volunteers (ABV)!

As a final-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS 2022-2027) student at University of Dundee Dental School, Benjamin needed a dentistry-related elective that combined clinical experience with meaningful outreach. He chose the ABV Kathmandu Dental Program at a large dental hospital serving poor, marginalized, and destitute communities in Nepal — where oral hygiene standards are low and treatment is often unaffordable.

With one year of experience as a dental nurse in Singapore, strong manual dexterity honed through arts & crafts, DIY projects, cooking & baking, plus prior volunteering at a Dundee soup kitchen and a church medical mission to Cambodia, Benjamin was perfectly prepared. Passionate about dentistry since age 14, he assisted local registered dentists with scaling, fillings, root canals (RCT), extractions, and more — while leading community outreach visits to schools, orphanages, and monasteries for oral health education, brushing demos, and check-ups.

Living with a host family, he gained deep cultural immersion in Kathmandu while fulfilling his university curriculum requirements in a real-world, resource-limited setting. This supervised placement delivered hands-on learning, global perspective on oral health disparities, and direct community impact.

Programs like ABV’s Nepal Dental Hospital placement (year-round, 1+ weeks, 30-40 hours/week) give dental students and pre-dental volunteers exactly this kind of high-value elective experience.

🚑 Welcome Matthew B. to La Ceiba, Honduras – EMT Rescue Ambulance Program Arrival 🚑

We are excited to announce the arrival of Matthew B. in La Ceiba, Honduras, where he has joined A Broader View Volunteers for the EMT Rescue Ambulance / Paramedic Rescue program.

Matthew, a certified Emergency Medical Technician (Unitek EMT, Tempe, AZ – 2025) and Associate of Biochemistry graduate (Glendale Community College, AZ – 2025), chose this hands-on volunteer experience because he believes EMS delivers one of the highest-impact branches of medicine. Paramedics meet patients on the worst days of their lives, carrying both the responsibility and the opportunity to deliver immediate, lifesaving care.

He specifically selected the volunteer EMS model in Honduras to understand its unique strengths and challenges compared with paid systems, while facilitating a genuine two-way exchange of knowledge, protocols, and methods between cultures. This experience directly supports his preparation for medical school and his long-term goal of becoming a trauma surgeon.

Matthew brings the exact qualities that make an outstanding volunteer: he asks insightful questions to understand the reasoning behind every procedure, offers constructive feedback, learns quickly, and thrives in high-stress, resource-limited environments. By the end of his program he expects to be performing at the highest intervention level allowed by his training and local supervisors.

This is real-world EMS work — ambulance operations, patient transfers, and rescue support alongside local teams in La Ceiba — and exactly the kind of immersive preparation future trauma surgeons need.

Follow Matthew’s journey and see how you can contribute to life-changing medical volunteering in Honduras.
