Janice Holloway and Dianne Griffin led a group of 8 hikers through Basin Cove and to the stone bridge a few miles up Grassy Gap Fire Road at Doughton Park on Friday morning. This was another beautiful day to be outdoors celebrating NC Trail Days.

Thanks, Dianne, for these pics.

Al Sternberg led a group of 7 into the forest of Doughton Park and 5 miles along Basin Creek to Caudill Cabin on Sunday. This out and back hike clocked in at 10 miles with approximately 30 total creek crossings - made easier (unfortunately) by the low amounts of rain this season. This was the last hike celebrating NC Trail Days for 2026.

Now time to plan hikes for 2027 :)

MST Trail Angels, Completers, and MST section hikers met a rousing welcome from the crowd at the Rail Yard after our loud hike with noise makers through town from Angry Troll. Thanks to owner Mitzi for the photo and warm welcome!

Keith Sidden led 30 hikers on the “Sunset and Stars” hike at Doughton Park Saturday evening/night. We enjoyed a leisurely-paced hike along the NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail taking in the amazing views along the way. Several hikers opted to stay for stargazing once the sun went down. It was a beautiful evening to celebrate NC Trail Days.

Thank you Mary Stewart for helping lead this hike.

21 paddlers hit the Yadkin River this morning for a casual float from Burch Station to Yadkin Shores access. This stretch is approximately 5 miles. It was a great morning to be on the water celebrating the last day of NC Trail Days. We missed one of our fellow paddlers from the group shot- thanks to those who contributed photos!

Joe Mickey led another moonshine still hike Saturday, sponsored by the Elkin Valley Trail Association and NC Trail Days, to visit some moonshine still sites, an old home site and great views from Combs Rock in Stone Mt. St. Pk. Many thanks to the 15 participants who made the hike fun despite the heat and to Barry Carlton who provided a few of the pictures for this post!

Thanks to Foothills Quilters of Elkin for adding fun and whimsy to our local trails and town over the years. Your creativity, work and dedication to NC Trail Days is so appreciated. The Ladybugs were a big hit this year. We hid some at our booth yesterday and especially the little ones who hadn’t been hiking were thrilled with not only finding one, but getting to keep it! EVTA can’t wait to see what you create next year. Thanks to all of you!

The first Camino De Vino™ guided hike has been completed, and the inaugural group of hikers had a great time at Grassy Creek Vineyards, Adagio Vineyards, and hiking the trails in between. Keith Sidden and Chris Ford led this hike. 26 hikers hit the trail this morning covering 5+ miles while enjoying great conversation in the great outdoors - and many enjoyed wine at two of this areas vineyards. We will be looking to do another Camino De Vino™ hike in the near future, so stay tuned to our MeetUp page for the next opportunity.

One of our highlights of the weekend is meeting with the MST Trail Angels and MST Completers. We had a fun gathering at Angry Troll and then a parade down Main Street to the Rail Yard where we had a very warm welcome!
