Reeling in a Great Day: Tim Wins the American Legion Post 114 Catfish Tournament

ELKIN, NC — Community spirit, great camaraderie, and a passion for the outdoors came together today for the American Legion Elkin Post 114 Catfish Tournament.

Anglers hit the water early, enjoying a beautiful day on the river and sharing plenty of friendly competition.

The conditions challenged everyone to bring their best skills to the water, and it was local angler Tim who rose to the occasion.

Showing great patience and precision, Tim landed an impressive catch to officially secure the first-place title.

Events like today's tournament highlight the very best of Elkin Post 114—bringing Veterans, families, and neighbors together for a relaxed day of outdoor fun.

Every participant who came out and cast a line helped support the Post's ongoing mission of community outreach and Veteran advocacy.

Congratulations to Tim on a fantastic victory!

A sincere thank you also goes out to all the volunteers, participants, and supporters who made today’s event a great success on the water.

Community, Connection, and Remembrance in Elkin
🌲
Yesterday, American Legion Elkin Post 114 was out in full force at Elkin Trails Day! It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with neighbors, share our mission, and sell raffle tickets to support our local veterans.
Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by our booth to chat and show their support.

A special and deeply heartfelt thank you goes out to our dedicated Legionnaires pictured here. These men and women generously gave up their personal time this weekend to set up, man the booth, and volunteer. Their presence was vital in doing the important work of reminding the public of what truly matters.

While we all enjoyed celebrating our beautiful local trails, yesterday’s date held a much deeper, more solemn meaning. June 6th marked the anniversary of D-Day—the historic Allied invasion of Normandy.

As our volunteers spoke with visitors, they noticed a tough reality: only a handful of people, mostly our elderly community members, still instantly recognized the significance of the date.

The American Legion’s mission isn't just to support veterans today; it’s to ensure that the monumental sacrifices of the past are never forgotten by future generations. The very freedom we enjoyed yesterday while walking the trails was bought at an incredible price on the beaches of France.

We are profoundly grateful to our community for engaging with us, and immensely proud of our volunteer Legionnaires who stand on the front lines of keeping that remembrance alive right here in Elkin.

The Tiny Click That Saved Lives in the Dark

Imagine stepping out of a C-47 at 1:00 AM into a pitch-black sky torn apart by flak.

Hours before the first boots hit the beaches on June 6, 1944, thousands of paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division dropped into a chaotic night over Normandy.

Blown miles off course and scattered across enemy lines, guys found themselves completely isolated in the thick, pitch-dark French hedgerows.

In those fields, every rustling leaf was a terrifying gamble. It could be a buddy looking for his unit, or it could be a German patrol. Shouting out a challenge meant giving away your position—and a bullet in the dark.

So, how did a bunch of scattered soldiers find each other without making a sound? They relied on a ten-cent toy.

Just days before the jump, the men were issued a tiny piece of brass and steel no bigger than a matchbox. Officially, it was the Acme No. 470 Clicker—but the troops just called it "The Cricket."

The protocol was simple, tight, and absolute:
If you heard someone creeping up on your position, you pressed the steel blade once: "CLICK-CLACK."
If they were friendly, they had to answer immediately with two quick clicks: "CLICK-CLACK, CLICK-CLACK."

If you got nothing but silence, you flipped your safety off and braced for a fight.

Because Allied high command didn't want the Germans capturing and mimicking the sound, the men were ordered to destroy or throw away the crickets within 24 hours of hitting the ground. Most guys did exactly that, which is why original D-Day crickets are incredibly rare pieces of history today.

But for those paratroopers hitting the dirt in the middle of the night, surrounded by the enemy, that cheap little piece of tin made the most beautiful sound in the world. It meant you weren't alone anymore. You had a brother at your back.

This D-Day, we don't just remember the massive battleships and the heavy artillery. We remember the sheer grit of the infantrymen who stepped blindly into the night, armed with nothing but their weapons, their courage, and a tiny brass clicker to find their way back to each other.

Memorial Day Message …

Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Their courage, selflessness, and dedication to defending our freedoms will never be forgotten.
For many of us, this day comes once a year. But as we look at the families left behind—like the heartbreaking image of a loved one grieving at a hero's grave—we are reminded of a profound truth: every day is Memorial Day for them. Their loss is a daily reality, a quiet sacrifice that continues long after the flags are lowered.
At American Legion Elkin Post 114, we carry their legacy forward every day by supporting our veterans, their families, and our local community.
As you spend time with family and friends today, please join us in a moment of silent gratitude for the heroes who gave their tomorrows for our todays, and keep the families who miss them every single day in your thoughts.
"Freedom is never free."

The Memorial Day weekend started off sunny on Thursday but by Saturday it was raining hard. But the foul weather didn’t dampen our team of dedicated volunteers to turn out to help hand out Buddy Poppies in remembering those service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom!
So thank you to each of the Legionnaires for standing in the rain this weekend in recognition of your brothers and sisters who gave their all for this great country … I have to believe they would have given anything to be able to have stood next to you if they could have this weekend.

Yesterday was the first of three of our Blood Drives along with the American Red Cross for 2026! The event was a major success with 38 pints of blood donated by the good citizens of our community. Even one of our own Legionaries, Darell Holloway decided to donate once the nurses discovered Darell’s blood was the second rarest blood type!
Thanks to everyone who supported this great cause and to the all the Veterans for donating their time in helping with this worthy life saving event.

Coach Ethan Creed of the American Legion Baseball Team for the 2025 Blanketeers stopped by our monthly meeting on Tuesday evening to present to our Post 114, a signed team photo for the 2025 season in recognition for our help in bringing back American Legion Baseball to the area. It had been more than 20 years since our local community and immediate surrounding area had an American Legion Baseball Team. That was before our Post 114 was re-established and the boys of summer are once again swinging the bats and balls were once again flying in the outfields.

Accepting the team photo signed by the players are our Financial Officer, Terry Hardy and Commander, Tim Hurst. According to Coach Creed, fourteen of the eighteen players will be returning for the second season of American Legion Baseball. So, plan to arrive early to the games as the stands will surely be filled with the fans' cries of “Play Ball”! Sponsored by the Veterans of the American Legion Elkin Post 114.
