It is easy for a mental health diagnosis to rewrite your identity and shrink your view of the future. But having a condition is not the same as being defined by it.
Samantha Karrá shares the stories of Natalia from Colombia and Sergio from Guatemala. Both carried years of shame until they made a daily choice to change how they viewed themselves. As Sergio says: "I live with depression and anxiety—but they do not live in me."
Choosing hope isn't about pretending the struggle doesn't exist; it is about recognizing that it does not own you. Research shows that when people shift their self-perception from "victim" to an active participant in their recovery, their long-term outcomes improve significantly.
