Rescue is all about second chances. We have some happy updates about two very deserving dogs, who got their 'happily ever after', all because people cared, and believed in those second chances.
Nugget, the black and white beauty, has spent majority of her life living on a chain. She previously had puppies. She spent months and years hoping for a chance, a life off the chain, away from harsh elements, a life of being safe and loved. Our friend and fellow rescuer in rural MO, Leslie, knew about her. This past January, with the artic blast coming, Leslie knew that Nugget would not survive outside on the chain, and even though she didn't have room, she brought Nugget home to be safe. Leslie was trying to find rescue for Nugget. We fell in love with her sweet, happy disposition, despite the sad life she had, and worked to find her a good home. Kalyn was looking for a friend to adopt, and when she found out about Nugget, it seemed like a good match. But just when we had everything lined up for Nugget to come to Omaha, we almost lost her. She suddenly fell sick, and it was only thanks to Leslie's quick response that her life was saved, yet again. HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis) is a severe, sudden-onset condition that causes rapid, life-threatening dehydration and thickening of blood. Thanks to Leslie and the Vet's quick intervention, Nugget's life was saved again, and she got to fly to Omaha for her new chance.
Puppy Joy had a scary, life-threatening condition herself. Just a wee little puppy, she found herself in a rural pound. She was just a baby, all alone in a scary pound. With no immunity and no vaccination, she got Parvo virus, a highly contagious and often deadly disease. The pound, having no resources to treat her, brought her to the Vet to be euthanized. Her life was to end before it ever even started. Thankfully the clinic reached out to Leslie, who in turn, helped and networked for her, to save her life. When we heard about Joy's plight, our hearts broke for her. No puppy deserves to die for lack of vaccination. Treatment was expensive, and there were no guarantees that she would survive, but we said that, as long as she wanted to fight, we would fight with her. When Rachel found out about Joy, she reached out with a foster to adopt offer. Thankfully, Joy's will to live was strong, and she pulled through.
These two girls are survivors, against the odds, and we are so grateful they made it. Once unwanted and discarded, they are now showing us just how deserving they are. They are sweet, funny, playful - they are showing us every day just how good it is to be alive, and how thankful they are for rescue, and for second chances.
For our part, our hearts are full of gratitude, too. For our generous supporters, who enable us to say Yes to helping dogs who need a lifesaver, even when they are facing life threatening sickness, even when Vet bills are mounting. We are thankful for extremely kind and selfless people, like Leslie, who gave these girls a chance, and helped them find their way to rescue. We owe a big Thank You to Katie and Lindsey, the pawesome pilots who flew the girls our way. We can't thank our adopters, Kalyn and Rachel, enough, for seeing these gems and knowing they are worthy of love. They are family.
