Indonesia is destroying some of the last untouched lowland forest on Earth, with devastating effects on wildlife.

In South Papua, the government's food and energy estate project is clearing millions of hectares of natural vegetation to plant rice and sugarcane. This land is home to species found – in some cases - nowhere else on the planet. They cannot simply relocate once their forest is gone. This is particularly devastating as this year’s “Godzilla El Niño” wipes out vast swathes of irreplaceable tropical forest in other parts of Indonesia.

Indonesia has shown before that agricultural expansion and forest protection do not have to be at odds with one another, and it can do so again.

Alors que près de 4 millions d’hectares de terres sont menacées en Indonésie par le programme Food & Energy Estates, dont près de 3 millions dans la province de Papouasie du Sud, des représentants autochtones de Papouasie seront exceptionnellement à Paris pour témoigner des conséquences de ce projet sur leurs territoires, leurs communautés et les forêts dont ils dépendent.

À l’occasion de leur venue, nous organisons la projection du documentaire Pig Feast: Colonialism in Our Time, réalisé par Dandhy Dwi Laksono et Cypri Jehan Paju Dale, suivie d’un échange avec les représentants autochtones présents, animé par Boris Patentreger, directeur France de Mighty Earth.

Screening & discussion: the Indigenous peoples of Papua on the front line of the world's largest deforestation project

Nearly 4 million hectares of land are under threat in Indonesia from the Food & Energy Estates program - including nearly 3 million hectares in the province of South Papua. Indigenous representatives from Papua will be in Paris for a rare visit to testify about the impact of this project on their territories, their communities, and the forests they depend on.

To mark their visit, we are organizing a screening of the documentary Pig Feast: Colonialism in Our Time, directed by Dandhy Dwi Laksono and Cypri Paju Dale, followed by a discussion with the Indigenous representatives present, moderated by Boris Patentreger, our France Director.

This is a unique chance to hear their testimony firsthand, better understand the scale of this deforestation project, and discuss the issues of forest protection, biodiversity, and Indigenous peoples' rights.

In Indonesia, fires are closing in on one of the most important orangutan research sites on Earth.

In Gunung Palung National Park, Borneo, wildfires have already burned within 200 meters of Rangkong research station. The station is a satellite of Cabang Panti, home to one of the longest-running studies of wild orangutans anywhere in the world. Scientists warn that, without intervention, the fires could reach Cabang Panti itself soon.

Bornean orangutans are critically endangered. More than 2,500 live in this park, but they're already being squeezed into smaller and smaller pockets of intact forest. Decades of deforestation for pulp and paper and palm oil are responsible, and that's now being supercharged by these fires; researchers with the Gunung Palung Orangutan Conservation Program have reported watching five orangutans from their long-term study population flee the flames, some just meters from the fire itself.

Orangutans have been found burned alive. Others are turning up in nearby villages with nowhere else to run after past displacement from nearby deforestation.

This is happening as we go through a so-called "Godzilla El Niño" - a global climate pattern which is drying and heating Indonesia, increasing the risk of devastating peat fires. These are so serious because once peat catches, it smolders underground for months.

That's what makes the firefighters and rangers working right now to rewet the peat and hold the line so remarkable. They are buying time for the orangutans and for one of the only truly intact stretches of lowland rainforest left in Borneo. Right now, the people on the ground fighting this fire desperately need much more support.

However, putting out this fire won't stop the next one. El Niño years like this will keep coming back harder as the planet warms, and the only way to change that trajectory is to cut the emissions driving it. That means cutting agricultural methane, the fastest emergency brake we have on near-term warming, decarbonizing steel, and, in Indonesia, stopping large-scale deforestation projects for good.

Fewer than 700 Tapanuli orangutans exist on Earth. In a few days last November, Cyclone Senyar tore through North Sumatra’s Batang Toru forest, the only place the species exists.

It killed around 8% of them. Scaled up for us, that’s the equivalent of losing more people in one event than live in the EU and UK combined.

The Tapanuli orangutan was only discovered in 2017, and it’s been under extreme pressure from habitat loss and infrastructure development in Batang Toru ever since. Protecting what’s left of Batang Toru, and stopping developments that would break it up further, must be a priority now if the species is to survive.

Behind this destruction lie global commodity chains - and European capital financing every link in that chain. 💸

The expansion of soy, livestock, mining and infrastructure is only possible through investments, credit, insurance, financing and financial services that allow large corporations to expand their operations. 🔥

The financial sector’s responsibility is real and urgent. delivered a letter to Groupe BPCE demanding:
🚫 A zero-deforestation policy
🚫 Exclusion of companies linked to land grabbing driven by industry, including meat and soy, and invasion of Indigenous Lands
✅ Full traceability across production chains
✅ Direct dialogue with Indigenous peoples

Financial institutions have the power to choose to protect the future of the planet, forests and Indigenous Peoples. And the time to act is NOW! ⌛️

📢 When a company won’t talk: we show up at its convention and make them listen.

We went to the Worldwide Convention in Las Vegas to find CEO Chris Kempczinski and present him with the McBurn & Burp Award, for achievement in nature and climate destruction. We talked to McDonald’s customers and learned that they care about protecting climate and nature.

Now we have a message for McDonald’s:
🌱 Diversify menus globally with more plants and less meat;
📊 Report and reduce methane emissions;
🌳 Eliminate deforestation across all supply chains.

🚨 New findings show that between 2024 and 2025, seven of Brazil’s ten states with the highest levels of tree cover loss exported leather to the European Union, accounting for nearly 20% of all leather imports from Brazil.

At the same time, over one million cattle were transported from Pará to major leather-exporting states, further increasing exposure to deforestation-linked supply chains. 🫠

Yet, the European Commission has proposed excluding leather from the scope of the . 🫩

💡 This raises a critical question: can deforestation be effectively addressed while leaving leather out?

Leather is co-product of beef, intrinsically linked. Addressing one while overlooking the other undermines efforts to tackle deforestation.

The technical capacity to ensure traceability already exists. There is no justification for removing leather from the scope of the .

While we're celebrating Indiana pride, it's worth facing a harsh truth: Indiana-based RV companies are connected through their supply chains to practices that harm sun bears in their native habitat in Indonesia. These companies, like Elkart, Indiana-based Thor, Patrick Industries, and Forest River, along with Winnebago, are buying massive amounts of wood from the rainforest there. This is leading to massive deforestation in one of the world's biodiversity hotspots. As this forest disappears, sun bears lose the land they need to survive.

So let's do both things at once:

Celebrate IU's championship season. Honor the sun bear who believed in IU and push these Indiana companies to clean up supply chains and protect rainforests, wildlife, and especially the IU-loving sun bears.
