Vibrant Communities

Vibrant Communities Vibrant Communities is a movement in Elkhart County that champions quality of place as a critical driver of economic growth. "How do we know that?

You’ve no doubt noticed the work we’ve put in over the past decade to improve our physical and natural environment. The Vibrant Communities, through a series of community conversations and planning sessions, has developed an Action Agenda of 77 projects, programs and policies. These items address the many areas which help build community pride and emotional attachment. By helping our area become a

n even greater place to live, work and play, we strengthen our own neighborhoods and communities, build connections and friendships, and position our area for economic growth by attracting residents and businesses. In 2017, the steering committee is prioritizing the Action Agenda items and organizing to move forward with each item. Here is a letter from our initiative's co-chairs for 2017, Arvis Dawson and Suzie Weirick,

"2017 is going to be fantastic year. Well, you’re reading this, for starters. Vibrant Communities launched with much hope in January 2016 and, with the voices of hundreds of you echoing in our ears throughout spring 2016, we have reached this moment when the possibilities for our future could not seem brighter. You packed meeting rooms to share what you loved about your hometown and what you wanted to see more of. From that came the Action Agenda. "Our beautiful downtowns and neighborhoods, from Nappanee to Middlebury, from Elkhart and Goshen to Bristol and Wakarusa, stand on the brink of some wonderful changes. Parks and trails are in the planning stages. Entrepreneurs are finding opportunity to do what they know best, in the location of their choosing. Neighbors are coming together to put in their sweat equity to make their town a more beautiful place. You helped make that happen. "Now it’s time to take the next step. Smart people are coming together for meetings, to plan workshops, to put creative energy into innovative and exciting projects — where do you see yourself helping out? We’d love for you to get involved. "Think of it as how we make a house our home. When we move into a house, we have the basics — rooms, heat, electricity, furniture — but it’s how we live in that space that gives it our personality. It feels comfortable and we want to invest more of our emotions and energy into it. "When you love where you live — your house, your neighborhood, your downtown — you want to make it better for everyone. That’s why we hope you’ll join us."

It's that time of year again! 🍎✨

To every teacher stepping back into the classroom: thank you. You're not just educating the next generation, you're shaping the future community leaders, innovators, artists, and neighbors who will make this county vibrant for decades to come.

And to our community: mark your calendars! The Friday night games, the fall plays, the art shows, the band concerts are moments that matter more than we know. Those extracurriculars aren't extras, they're where community is built, and they're a huge part of what makes Elkhart County such a special place!

As our schools and streets fill back up, let's all do our part to keep our kids safe. Slow down in school zones, watch for buses, and look out for little ones on foot and on bikes. 🚌

Here's to a great school year, Elkhart County. 💛

Big things are happening in the City of Nappanee, IN. 👀

The Nappanee Redevelopment Commission is executing on its Downtown Master Plan, and the vision is coming to life block by block. The strategy? Activating underutilized spaces to create pedestrian-friendly destinations that draw people downtown to shop, dine, and connect.

Cartoon Alley was just the beginning! This corridor has been transformed into a celebration of Nappanee's history, complete with eye-catching comic strip murals that have become a community landmark.

And now work has begun on Shoe Alley! A collaborative effort between the RDC and the Nappanee Arts Council, Shoe Alley will feature 50 new sculptures by a diverse range of artists, including the high school welding program, college art students, and professional sculptors, honoring the many shoe stores that once made Nappanee home.

This is what vibrant communities look like. 💛

Big news for Elkhart County! 🎉

Two of our own just landed READI 2.0 Arts & Culture awards from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation!

🎨 City of Elkhart - Government's Freight Street District Initiative received $1.5 million to transform an underutilized corridor into a walkable, culturally rich destination, including a recreation of Kelby Love's iconic 1996 mural and upgrades to the National New York Central Railroad Museum.

🏺The Northern Indiana Clay Alliance received $300,000 to establish Downtown Goshen's first permanent, public-facing ceramics facility, bringing studio space, workshops, artist residencies, and exhibitions to a historic 8,000-square-foot building.

Congratulations to both on this incredible recognition. This is what investing in vibrant communities looks like.
