Today, we had the privilege of welcoming back a patient who survived a traumatic injury and returned to meet some of the people involved in her care.

She shared how far she has come in her recovery and expressed her gratitude to everyone who played a role; from dispatch, police, fire, EMS and hospital staff to Dr. Koenig and his trauma team and the many others involved in her treatment.

Dr. Koenig, head of trauma surgery at Elkhart General Hospital, noted that without the prehospital whole blood administered by Lieutenant Minker and Driver Operator Burtscher, along with the outstanding care she received at the hospital, she likely would not be here today. Lieutenant Girard’s calm and compassionate patient care was also an important part of this successful outcome.

This visit was a powerful reminder that saving a life takes a team. From the first 911 call through hospital care and recovery, countless professionals from different agencies and specialties work together to make outcomes like this possible.

We are honored to have been part of her story and grateful to see her continuing to beat the odds.

This week, members of Elkhart Firefighters Local 338 attended the 50th Annual Convention of the Professional Firefighters Union of Indiana.

Representing Local 338 were Matthew Bryant, Blayne LeClaire, Brandon Bridwell, and Ethan Robinson. Throughout the convention, they participated in educational sessions, legislative resolutions impacting departments throughout the state, leadership training, and discussions on issues impacting firefighters and public safety professionals across Indiana.

Attending events like the PFFUI Convention allows our members to bring back valuable knowledge, build relationships with firefighters from around the state, and continue strengthening Local 338’s ability to serve both our members and the Elkhart community.

Thank you to the Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana and Indianapolis Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 416 for hosting another successful convention and celebrating 50 years of supporting Indiana’s firefighters.

Not every call for Elkhart City Fire involves lights and sirens. Today’s visitors at station 6 included a mama duck and her crew of ducklings, who decided the station yard was part of their daily route.

After a little wandering around and some quality scene management by Engine 6 crews, the family received a firefighter es**rt to safely cross the road and continue on their way.

No injuries, no distress noted, and all parties made it safely to the other side. Engine 6 can officially add “duck crossing guard” to the list of services they provided today. 🦆🚒

Here comes your water!!

C-Shift took advantage on the beautiful morning today and got out and did some relay pump training. This pumping operation involves a chain of engines working together to move water over long distances, ensuring a steady, high-pressure water supply to the scene. It’s all about coordination, communication, and constant monitoring of those gauges.

On April 29, our Whole Blood Program reached its one-year anniversary.

In just one year, the need for this program has exceeded our initial expectations. To date, we have administered 38 units of whole blood in the field to 38 patients experiencing signs of significant hemorrhagic shock. This effort has contributed to the possible prevention of multiple otherwise preventable deaths resulting from medical bleeding and both accidental and intentional injuries.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to continued early activation of this resource and hope to see further growth in infrastructure, both locally and throughout our region, to support this lifesaving initiative.

This program would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our city and fire administration, as well as the guidance of our Medical Director, Dr. Jason Bailey. We are also grateful for the coordination provided by the blood bank at Elkhart General Hospital, with special recognition to Technical Specialist Angela Bollman, who has served as our liaison since day one.

Special Note: “Potential life years saved” is calculated based on a patient’s life expectancy minus their age at the time of infusion.

It’s been a busy few weeks for the newest EFD recruits—and they’ve been getting after it.

From throwing ladders and working off the roof with both hand tools and saws, to putting in reps on VES (Vent-Enter-Search), they’re building the skills it takes to operate when it counts. It’s not just going through the motions—these guys and girls are learning how to think, move, and work as a team under real conditions.

Good work is being put in every day💪🏽 Only 8 more weeks to go, stay strong

Linda Rogers has supported firefighters throughout her time in the Indiana Senate. While we risk our health and welfare to help protect those in our community, it is Senators like Linda Rogers who fight to protect us. Her diligent effort and support have strengthened and protected the benefits that our families and we rely on. It is because of this that the Elkhart Professional Firefighters ask that you join us in our support for Linda Rogers in the Indiana Republican Primary on May 5th.
