Sometimes timing is everything. Our friendâs daughter was in a life-threatening car accident, and they spent stressful days and nights at the hospital. While there, they were able to utilize some services of a local Ronald McDonald House; finding a respite from waiting rooms and a place to take care of basic needs we all take for granted until you are afraid to leave your childâs side. For us, it hit home just how fast life can change. Shortly after, Jared was approached to join the Board of Directors for RMHC of Michiana. If you know us, you know Jared and I do not have children. What you may not know is that we went through several rounds of IVF and recurrent pregnancy loss on our road to acceptance. This was all while we became increasingly involved in a charity serving children and their families. You might think this was an emotional minefieldâŚand sometimes it was. We were struggling through our recurring grief, unknown future, and the stress of a life dictated by medical appointments and medications. However, at RHMC, we saw this struggle mirrored in others, and were buoyed by witnessing the importance of family, support, and hope. We also saw purpose and opportunity: To be able to support a mission that helps others in the throes of their own unknowns and grief. Involvement with RHMC
After Jaredâs first year on the board, he took on the roll of Vice President, and then served 3 years as the Board President, including the infamous 2020 and the immense challenges it brought an organization serving a vulnerable clientele in a medical facility. Jared wrapped up his time on the Board as Past President in 2023 and now hangs out with all the other Board alumni on the Governance Committee. If youâve met this committee, they like their community service served with a side of good wine. Outside of the Board, we have had the honor of volunteering with the âCoffee Cartâ, taking the coffee cart to each hospital room in the Beacon Childrenâs Hospital to offer coffee, snacks, juice and books or small toys to patients and families, the Chef for a Day program where volunteers provide dinner for those currently in residence at the house or with children in treatment, and wrapping presents for the North Pole, where fabulous donated presents are available to families to âshopâ for all of their children, not just those in treatment. This year, we are asking for your help to support Ronald McDonald House Charities of Michiana and all of the amazing people that make it successful every day.
