Another Grant Project completed. H and H Mechanical replaced the old HVAC system that had stopped running, for this senior couple. Funds from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis, routed through 1st Source Bank paid for this work. Builders of Hope was the sponsoring agency for this couple. This is one of the 197 Grant Projects that Builders of Hope has facilitated since 2015.

Another homeowner with a new roof. This house had serious roof issues, with leaks damaging the ceiling. We sponsored the homeowner for grant funds from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis that paid Lance Mestach and the crew from RainDrain to replace the roof, including plenty of sheathing, the gutters, and the damaged drywall on the ceilings.

Builders of Hope assisted a homeowner in her mid 60's as she applied for a grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis. One of the modifications to her home was a stairlift that was a necessity due to the neuropathy in her feet. Moving her laundry facilities to the main floor would have been very costly. She now has full, safe access to her basement.

Each Spring Builders of Hope sponsors low income homeowners for home repair grants from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis. These grants, ranging as high as 15,000/homeowner enable the homeowner to hire contractors to make major repairs to their home, with ALL of the grant funds going to the contractor. This year Builders of Hope was able to get 12 applications approved before the funds were exhausted.

One of the homeowners we are assisting this year is a middle aged man who lives alone and is confined to a powerchair and has limited mobility. The roof on his home had been improperly covered with shingles on the flat, low slope roof. This permitted water that pooled in any depressions to work its way back under the shingles and rotted the roof decking. MorGab Construction removed all the roofing, including the rotted decking, re-shingled the sloped roof and installed TPO Roof covering on the low slope flat roof.

Builders of Hope will use donor funds and volunteer labor to repair the ceiling that had collapsed due to the leaks from the improperly installed roof covering.

So, a good week. 3 of the 12 grant applications being reviewed were approved. A single woman in her 60’s who suffers from neuropathy in her feet will get a stairlift installed to enable her to access her basement laundry facilities and storage areas in the basement and will have windows and a storm door replaced and a railing installed on her front porch. A couple with a badly leaking roof will get a new roof and repairs to the ceiling from water damage caused by the leaking. And a widow in her 60’s will get a new roof, a replaced picture window with sidelites and 6 kitchen/dining area windows replaced. On Saturday, May 17, volunteers from Maple City Chapel replaced 7 windows in 3 bedrooms for this same homeowner and cleaned up a lot of overgrowth surrounding the house.

Finally, I visited a homeowner in Nappanee to see about replacing some panels of a privacy fence and replacing the roof of the storage shed and constructing a new set of steps at the back door. Planning to do that in June.

Enjoy the pictures of our work on May 17.

Just met with a homeowner today to get her signature on a quote from a contractor to install a stairlift to her basement. Work will be paid by grant funds from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis. The same grant will also pay another contractor to replace drafty windows and patio door, replace a storm door and install a railing on her front porch.

This is the first grant approved out of the twelve we submitted this year. Just love giving homeowners the good news that help is coming.

It was snowy outside this morning, but inside the home in Goshen, volunteers from Maple City Chapel were busy trimming out the new windows they installed last Fall, and replacing the rear entry door to the house.

A line from one of the songs from our worship this past Sunday has held on to me through the Christmas celebrations: “Hope has a name Emmanuel.” It reminds me of the charge I have given to many of our volunteer teams this year. We have reminded them that as followers of Christ, when we enter the home of someone who has requested repair assistance from Builders of Hope, we take the presence of Emmanuel, God with us, into the darkness and hopelessness they experience in their poverty. Our demonstration of selfless love and service is a message that God has not forgotten their need.

In a world that is broken, angry and unloving, we have the incredible opportunity BY OUR ACTS OF LOVING SERVICE to show them the loving face of a God who came to live among us because He loves us.

Using grant funds from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis and Centier Bank, Builder of Hope was able to assist this couple by converting the bathtub into a walk in shower for the wife who suffers from MS. We also installed an ADA height toilet, replaced the roof, repaired the soffit and fascia and installed new gutters and downspouts.
