What an amazing effort by all! Thank you to the volunteers who helped make the City of Elkhart a bit more green. We'll all enjoy these trees for years to come.

Plan the first 15 minutes of a new volunteer's shift before they arrive.

Have someone greet them by name, show them where to leave their coat, and walk them to their first task. Volunteers who feel expected on day one are more likely to sign up for a second shift.

If you want help building a volunteer onboarding plan, reach out to Acts of Service.

"What propelled me to want to continue to do this work? I literally tell people all of the time, it's because I have the best job in the entire world. Because I can empower people to find their 'why.'"
Ashley Jordan, Director, Acts of Service

When people think of volunteering at a park, they usually picture picking up trash and raking. At City of Elkhart Parks & Recreation, it also looks like coaching youth sports, teaching a nature photography class, and greeting people at events. Meet Mandi Null, the volunteer coordinator who built the Roots Crew into a program hundreds of people now show up for, and hear what's kept her going. Read the full story >

It's been a bit since we've introduced ourselves. If you're new here, welcome! And if you've been with us a while, here's a refresher on what we do.

Acts of Service is the hub for volunteerism and resource connection in Elkhart County. We help volunteers find opportunities that fit their skills and interests, source volunteers for nonprofit events, and work alongside organizations to grow and retain their volunteer programs.

We connect resources, too. When a nonprofit needs a product, a service, or a skill, someone in this county can usually provide it. Our job is to make that connection happen.

“They are tiny, but they are mighty. They can do amazing things, and I know so many times people think they are just little kids. They are in kindergarten through fifth grade. That’s too young. No, these kids can do amazing things, and these kids are going to be the leaders of the future. And these kids are learning how to be servant leaders. This is how you teach them.”

Annie Alvarado
Scout Leader, Pack 797

From packing food boxes to clearing invasive species at local parks, the scouts of Pack 797 show up wherever the Elkhart community needs them.
