Game Changers don’t often make an impact in this world by working alone, and this is certainly true for Breanna from FTC Team 8711, The Gas Attendants. Breanna, who was diagnosed with autism when she was two years old, walks through life with a loyal friend by her side, and the two are inseparable. Betty is a shiny black lab who has been trained as a service dog to help Breanna manage aspects of autism during her daily life. Betty became everybody’s “favorite robotics student” from the moment the two started attending practices together. Breanna explains, “Betty has brought laughter, calmness, and most importantly love to our robotics program.” Betty has a calming effect on Breanna when she gets overstimulated during meetings and competitions. For example, Betty recognizes when Breanna needs to take a break from an activity, and even the simple act of taking Betty on a walk can help Breanna have a more positive and enjoyable experience. “Seeing her wanting to help me and love on me allows me to focus better and have fun.” Betty also helps Breanna step out of her comfort zone by giving her confidence to try new things like robotics. Breanna also says, “Participating in robotics has helped me the most. FIRST has given me a place to deal with my anxiety and most importantly a place where I feel like I fit in.” Currently, Breanna is working on a project that will make robotics more accessible to students on the autism spectrum. Called All-Embracing Robotics, the youth robotics program launching in Bristol, IN has a mission to inspire youth to embrace their true identity in a fun and safe environment, all while learning STEM. Breanna says, “All kids are welcome to come together and feel like they fit in no matter what. Our program helps youth shape their own values while providing them with all the tools, resources, and support they need in order to evolve into confident leaders of tomorrow, all with the help of FIRST and their core values.”
