Democratic New Carlisle Town Council candidate Marcy Kauffman told the board she thought her candidacy paperwork was in order because Republican Clerk Amy Rolfes’ staff said it was.

Democratic Party Chair Don Westerhausen said “It was either incredible incompetence or deception.” He says he’ll sue the board Friday, the statutory deadline for ballot certification, if it doesn’t return the candidates to the ballot by then.

As a judge dismissed all charges Wednesday against Iris Seabolt after she spent 19 years in prison, Notre Dame Exoneration Justice Clinic founder James J. Gurule called for an independent counsel to investigate all post-conviction relief cases that Elkhart Police Detective Steven Rezutko worked. He died by su***de in 2019.

Elkhart County now has the most wrongful convictions of any Indiana county, including Marion, the state's largest county.

The National New York Central Railroad Museum is bidding farewell to a historic steam engine. Mohawk No. 3001 has been housed in Elkhart since the 1980s, but its ownership has been transferred to the Fort Wayne Railroad, in the hopes that it’ll be able to get it running again.

The Republican-majority county election board will decide Thursday if they agree.
