Is the manure basin almost full? This picture was taken 9-2-23 using a zoom lens. My calculations suggest that the freeboard may be as little as 2 feet, and that is the minimum law allows. But with no approved NMP, no manure can be withdrawn, and I assume the cows keep pooping. I have limited confidence in my calculations, so if you are strong in physics and especially camera lens calculations, please contact me at [email protected] and we can Zoom to discuss. I don't want to cry wolf, but if I'm correct, it's time to report this and have the DNR do an inspection. Some facts...

The distance from camera point of observation on Hwy 18 to the concrete sluice at the NW end of the basin is 1300 ft. The sluice is 21 feet wide. The distance from the sluice to the farm house in the background is 2000 ft, and the distance from the farmhouse to the silo that looks like it's on the back porch is actually 200 ft. We know that the entrance angle of the sluice is 8.79 degrees from arithmetic I'll also have you check.

The zoom lens maintains the fidelity of the X-Y plane as I've drawn it, and compresses the Z-axis... duh... magnification. I "think" I can use the known width of the sluice (21 ft) to estimate the length of the exposed side of the sluice as 11.55 feet, which is the hypotenuse of a right triangle with angle 8.79 degrees. That means the freeboard height is about 1.8 feet, already less than I think Code allows.

Of course the measurement of 11.55 feet assumes the X and Y scales are equal, which they are not. There is a Z component to that slope, but the Z-component is only a few feet (about 10 feet if freeboard is 2 feet). Is the magnification large enough that I can assume the X-Y scales are equal over that short Z distance? If "yes" then it is time to panic!

Steve Beaumont, 81, formerly of Garber and Iowa City, died Friday, June 16, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home, where he had been a resident since 2019.

Steve grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He attended Grinnell College, then earned a PhD in history from the University of Wisconsin. He also served in the U. S. Coast Guard.

Steve made his living as a carpenter in Johnson County. When he moved to his Jupiter Ridge Farm near Garber in 2000, he built an energy efficient home there, and installed an array of solar panels.

A passionate conservationist, Steve reconstructed several plots of prairie at Jupiter Ridge. He also maintained a huge garden, which provided much of his own food.

Others in the community benefited greatly from Steve’s skills and generosity. His carpentry expertise and advice were invaluable in restoration work at Motor Mill, where he was one of the most dedicated volunteers.

Steve also volunteered for the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, and for the Clayton County Conservation Awareness Network, which honored him with a conservation award in 2019.

Steve’s dedication and benevolence culminated with the 2016 donation of his farm to the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust (SILT), an organization formed to protect farmland to be used for growing food. That gift has enabled Will Lorentzen and Adrian White to start a successful business growing produce and raising mushrooms at Jupiter Ridge Farm.

Steve is survived by a sister, Margaret (Becky) Sabin, and a brother, Frederick (Fritz) Beaumont, both of Boise, Idaho.

Steve will be remembered for his love of the land.
A friend and neighbor, Natasha Hegmann, summed it up:
“Steve has quietly left an incredible conservation legacy in Clayton County.”

There will be an informal celebration of Steve’s life at 6 pm Wednesday ,June 29 at Motor Mill.
