Haunted villages tremble, werewolves stalk the wilds, Vistani whisper prophesies via cursed tarot, and shadows teem with betrayal. Rally the townsfolk, expose the abbot’s secrets, storm the castle…and shatter Strahd’s curse…or perish eternally. Roll the dice for initiative.

Please note: new players must bring a completed character sheet, in order to participate in the current campaign.

Dungeons and Dragons sessions run from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M., and are free, and open to the public. Players must be between 12 and 18 years of age, and yes, there is a parental release form. Through hands-on exercises and interactive partner drills, you’ll develop coordination, sharpen your reflexes, and build lasting confidence. Test your knowledge of movies, music, and TV shows (past and present), or dive into quizzes on historical events, famous figures, and milestones – win fabulous prizes! Gather your friends and family members (trivia questions can be intended for grandparents, siblings, and even “that guy” who has memorized every episode of “The Simpsons“ television series). Once again, we will offer a BBQ dinner (smoked sausage onna bun, condiments, and chips) for a donation. This event runs from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Market hours are 10 A.M. to 2 P.M., and if you are interested in selling at the market, please contact Melissa at 509-309-9370, or check our page. We are always looking for vendors selling garden plant starts and produce – please call Melissa!

14 April – GARDEN CLUB MEETING

We will meet at 7 P.M. to discuss and analyze our inherent need to grow food crops, and why only weeds survive our efforts. Actually, during the meeting we will discuss the how’s and why’s of drip irrigation in the home garden (hint: time and money savings). Please join us for some neighborly socializing, snack food consumption, and a fun evening among like-minded folks.

15 April – MUSIC AT THE GRANGE

Please join us for an evening (from 6:30 P.M. to 9 P.M.) of music, storytelling, singing, food, fun, and theme-dancing.

Hosted by local musicians, we have been recently visited by bands such as “The Rocking Chair Romeos”, “Fabulous Imperfection”, and “The Popeye-Rose Social Club”, and many (!) more individual entertainers, singers, and performers.

Just want to sit, listen, be entertained (and sing along, if you remember the lyrics)? This is the evening for you. Please note that we have expanded our event hours to accommodate all the local musicians

singers, story-tellers (regional favorite Dan Conley promises some new stories), and listeners. Once again, we will offer a BBQ dinner (smoked sausage onna bun, condiments, and chips) for a donation. This event is free, and open to the public.

18 April – LEATHER TOOLING WORKSHOP: stamping and tooling

Join leather work instructor Joe Flatter and helper/favorite son Sam, for a three-hour workshop on making plain old leather into a thing of style and function. This class is perfect for beginners, and for those who want to renew their leatherworking skills.

This workshop will focus on stamping and tooling, with an emphasis on completing your project, using your own tools or Joe’s, so bring your own project or kit. Want to use your own favorite designs and patterns? Joe will assist you in making new patterns, or you can adapt some of Joe’s – leather working questions from students are welcome.

Class runs from 9 A.M. to noon, and costs $10 per student.

21 April – TEEN GAME AND PIZZA NIGHT!

Camden Grange and Community Center, in partnership with the Pend Oreille County Library District, will offer another evening just for teens, to play board games, socialize with friends, and consume free pizza (non-gluten crust as well), popcorn, and soft drinks!

We’ll have a variety of games supplied by the Library: old favorites like “UNO”, “Catan”, and “Jenga” to newer games like “Uno: Dare!”, and “Cover your assets”.

This event is free to everyone, ages 12-18, with parental approval (yes, there is a required permission form, AND parents are encouraged to leave the Grange premises while their teens game and eat).

Event runs from 7-9 P.M., and no registration is required.

23 April – CAMDEN GRANGE BOOK CLUB

Our new Camden Grange Book Club will provide you with a community where people who like to read, can come together to explore different genres (science fiction, history, mysteries, etc.). A place and time where people can just hang out, and have fun in a no-pressure environment (NO term papers, no essays, no compare and contrast assignments, LOL). Feel free to bring your favorite book obsessions with you.

This month’s literary read is “Killers of the Flower Moon: the Osage murders and the birth of the FBI”, by David Grann.

Our Club meets from noon to 2 P.M. We do not offer child care services, so this Club is open to adults and teens.

29 April – FIBER ARTS COMMUNITY GATHERING

Laura Ast will host another evening of wool spinning and conversation, for local spinners, weavers, crocheters, and sheep raisers. Beginning spinners and accomplished spinners alike are welcome to sit, and spin, and talk about their wooly experiences - and maybe pass along some tips and techniques. Weavers, crocheters, knitters, tatters, and shepherds are welcome as well – we are all part of the same community. If you already own a spinning wheel, please bring it along; otherwise treadled wheels will be provided. If you have your own supply of wool, or some fleece to trade, please also bring it along. Event runs from 7–9 P.M., and is free to everyone.

For more information on what is happening at Camden Grange and Community Center, you can look at our website, Camdengrange.org, or our page (Camden Grange and Community Center, in the Community Center group). Also, you can check out our free lending library box, located on the Grange front porch: it’s filled with free books for youths, teens, and adults. Please take some books, and consider joining our book club – see details above.

WEEDING BETWEEN THE LINES

by Jim McGinty

Spring has officially sprung, according to the calendar, though our overnight low temperatures deny that man-made assertion. Yes, it’s still too cold out there for your tomatoes, peppers, and most everything.

Some plants actually handle the cold well: peas, spinach, kale, chard, and the like. This early gardening season, I’m experimenting with sowing a raised bed with sugar pea’s on a trellis, and I’m also trying (again!) a form of “potatoe tower”, employing welded wire fencing. My earlier “tower” attempts only attracted rodents: I’m sure the gophers, moles, and voles have some meat protein content, but that is NOT my goal.

The garlic crop is up and looking good, here at Rancho McGinty – I gingerly raked the maple leaf mulch off the nine inch tall spears, and they immediately grew an inch taller, and even more dark green in the direct sunlight.

Also popping up are the rhubarb, comfrey, and even some strawberry plants – I suspect the greenery is just as weather-confused as we humans.

Indoors, I’ve started seeds of some plants that will replace any late-frost damaged crops in the open garden: kale, cabbage, chard, spinach, lettuce, that sort of thing. If the seeded plants in the raised beds are “bopped” by a late-frost, I’ll have replacement volunteers, and if the frost misses our garden (UN-likely, LOL), I’ll have extra plants to poke into open spots.

In the berry patch, I’ve finished pruning out the old fruit-bearing thornless canes from last year, leaving the green/blue canes (they are really vines) to produce delicious “Doyle” blackberries. Can’t wait until July and blackberry milkshakes!

Most berry plants appreciate a Spring tonic of fertilizer/manure at this time – could use the dry or liquid varieties, as long as the nitrogen content is larger than the other components (ex. NPK = 12-4-8). Cottonseed meal or blood meal are good organic substitutes. Fertilize now, again in eight weeks, and again after harvest.

It’s time to check the compost bins – they have been rained on enough that I don’t think they have dried, so I’ll start adding some really fresh manure from the barnyard, plus some straw wastes, and some over-Wintered maple tree leaves I collected in bags.

In the orchard, our fruit tree buds are fuzzy and in danger of a late frost – not too much we can do about that. Years ago, I read about orchardists who sprayed a light water mist over their fruit trees to reduce/cancel frost damage – I tried this technique only once: the “mist” solidified into thick ice overnight, and broke branches – lesson learned!

GARDEN CALENDAR:

On 09 April, those fanatical foliage fanciers, the Master Gardeners of Pend Oreille County will offer a seed starting class, along with a seed swap, from 6:00 P.M. to 8 P.M. in the CREATE art center, located at 900 West 4th street, Newport. Class cost is $5 per person, or $8 per couple, and you can register for this class by calling the Extension Office at 509-447-2401.

On 14 April, our local garden club will hold it’s second meeting of the season, at 7 P.M., in Camden Grange and Community Center (fashionably located at 7 Camden Road, Elk, WA). We will be talking about the benefits of adding drip irrigation to the garden, and we will be socializing, exchanging garden tips and resources, and eating really good snack food. Our meetings are a lot of fun, and one can always learn something from a roomful of like-minded folks.

Time to run out the garden between raindrops, and finish the sugar pea trellis – no sign of green sprouts yet, but they are lurking just below the dirt, I just KNOW it, LOL.

Amend your calendar for some fun this week at Camden Grange and Community Center (peacefully located at 7 Camden Road, Elk, WA):

On wednesday, the 8th of April, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., our favorite family trivia night hosts, Kevin and Karen, will offer another fun and educational (?!) evening with trivia questions that will delight and challenge you, your family members, and friends.

We will also offer our culinarilly-approved barbecue dinner of sausage onna bun, condiments, and chips for a mere donation on your part - family fun and an inexpensive evening out!

On saturday, the 11th of April, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., we will host our first farmer's and artisan's market of 2026. Lots of locally-made or locally-grown items, from leather crafts to plant starts - handmade soap, lotions, crocheted toys, even books from our local authors - be sure to check out our kitchen where another of our famous lunches will be offered.

Warmer and dryer out there - time to exit hibernation, and enjoy the spring-time air.

See you there

Our Club meets from noon to 2 P.M. We do not offer child care services, so this Club is open to adults and teens.

28 February – GARDEN SEED STARTING WORKSHOP

Learn from the Pend Oreille Master Gardeners how to start your own garden seeds – the timing is just right for those who want to know answers to these questions: why is growing from seed best, what kind of supplies and seed starting mix do I need, how do I plant seeds to maximize seed germination, and what kind of crops should be direct sown? Starting your own garden plants from seed will save you money, allow you to choose the plants you want (and not just those available from the local nurseries), and time your planting to your garden needs.

This workshop is perfect for both beginning gardeners, and experienced gardeners. Class runs from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M., and costs $10 per student.

If you want a copy of the class handout, please register for the class at camdengrange.org, so we can e-mail your copy.

A place and time where people can just hang out, and have fun in a no-pressure environment (NO term papers, no essays, no compare and contrast assignments, LOL). Feel free to bring your favorite book obsessions with you.

This month’s literary read is “Bendigo Shafter”, by Louis L’Amour: a rugged settler from Wyoming travels to New York city to reclaim his childhood sweetheart.

Our Club meets from noon to 2 P.M. We do not offer child care services, so this Club is open to adults and teens.

28 January – FIBER ARTS COMMUNITY GATHERING

Patrick Shanahan will host another evening of wool spinning and conversation, for local spinners, weavers, crocheters, and sheep raisers. Beginning spinners and accomplished spinners alike are welcome to sit, and spin, and talk about their wooly experiences - and maybe pass along some tips and techniques. Weavers, crocheters, and shepherds are welcome as well – we are all part of the same community.
