What a great frozen four championship game. Being from Minnesota, I was routing on the Gophers and former SCSU head coach Bob Motzko. The third period was great example of a phenomenon in sports psychology. The Gophers started to play not to lose with a one goal lead. Instead of being aggressive against the #1 ranked defense like they did in the first and second periods, they got complacent and it seemed like they were battling the clock rather than their opponent Quinnipiac. The complexion of the game totally changed and opened up more opportunities for the more aggressive team in that period. A complete momentum and game changing mindset that cost the Gophers the championship. For Vikings fans, this would be the equivalent of the “prevent” defense that ultimately leads to disappointment and frustration.
