Two weeks in Zambia. A lifetime of impact. 🐘🌍

Between 25 June and 9 July 2027, Africa Hope Fund will be inviting you to the South Luangwa Valley on a trip that combines genuine volunteer work, a cultural connection, and top-quality wildlife in an unforgettable experience.

Here's what your days could look like:

✔️ Mornings volunteering in local literacy centers, helping children build English skills that open doors to education

✔️ Working alongside recent high school graduates in Project Luangwa's Foundation Program, supporting the life skills and leadership training that prepares them for university and beyond

✔️ Afternoons and evenings exploring South Luangwa's legendary wildlife, elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, painted dogs, and more

✔️ Visits to the conservation and education partners doing the on-the-ground work across the valley

It’s not an ordinary safari; it’s an opportunity to give your time, to build connections, and to witness the real impact that work led by the community can make, all while enjoying the adventure of a lifetime.

Happy World African Wild Dog Day 🐾

Painted dogs scientifically known as Lycaon pictus, or "painted wolf" are one of Africa's most striking and endangered carnivores. No two individuals share the same coat pattern, and their pack bonds are just as remarkable: the whole group shares in a hunt's spoils, with adults regurgitating food for pups, elders, and the injured.

Once numbering in the hundreds of thousands across the continent, fewer than 6,000 remain in the wild today, placing them on the IUCN Red List as Endangered. The Luangwa Valley remains one of their last true strongholds, home to one of the largest surviving populations anywhere in Africa.

We're grateful to our partner, Conservation South Luangwa (CSL), for their tireless work protecting this population from anti-poaching patrols and de-snaring efforts to rapid veterinary response for injured or snared dogs. Their work is a vital part of keeping this ecosystem, and the communities connected to it, thriving.

Today, we celebrate these extraordinary animals and everyone working to secure their future in the Luangwa Valley.

Zambia hosts two subspecies of waterbuck, and one can tell them apart by examining the markings on their rumps; the common waterbuck (which is found in the Luangwa and in the Lower Zambezi) has a distinct white ring, whereas the defassa waterbuck, which is located in Kafue, has broad white patches instead.

If you look carefully you will see that their coat has a shaggy and nearly oily appearance, and this is no coincidence since it is due to a greasy secretion which is thought to help protect them from the rains in the valley.

You'll usually spot waterbuck grazing calmly on South Luangwa's open plains, but don't let that calm fool you, they're a regular target for the valley's lions, leopards, and wild dogs, making them an important part of the predator-prey balance that keeps this ecosystem thriving.
