On May 23, 2026, A good-sized and good humored crowd of 30 volunteers descended on the Freeport Bridge area to clean the beach areas, slopes, levee, and roadway.
Our mission aided the residents who’ve been fighting the trash battle and illegal dumping for years.
Travis, Janet and Bob welcomed us to their town, and State Park officers joined us for a bit as they observed our efforts and shared information about their work at this location.
Our friends from Project Pick Up Fishing Line (PPUFL) lead efforts to amass an inordinate amount of fishing line and gear. Thank you! Project: Pick up fishing line
Before our safety talk we enjoyed Khaliah’s famous chocolate chip cookies, Jeb’s fresh-baked brownies with peanut butter baked in, donut holes from JRs Donut Shop brought by Sharon, and water and Gatorade from Travis. Thank you so much for the goodies!
Also thanks to Randy for donating a nylon rope with carabiner.
As we got going, everybody spread out to areas they were comfortable working at. Several volunteers hit the roadway to collect the trash. Others went to areas known to have trash left behind by those who fish. David Irons hit the river with his waders on and used a cultivator to rake the river bottom for fishing line and other debris. Anoop, Nelson, Marichris, Phil and Donna, and the Crouson family hit the side slopes that were loaded with scattered trash piles and lots of fishing line.
Our friends from PPUFL had a successful day removing dangerous line and tackle from everywhere!
Many hands made light work and we thank everyone for donating their time.
Bob expressed gratitude for our efforts and also gave a shout out to Travis who’s been picking up trash for many years.
And to make the cleanup even more fun, David ran the bottle cap contest again. We collected over 620 bottle caps drawing attention to the behavior of careless humans. Liz won with the closest guess and donated her $$ to the refreshment fund!

Aside from weekday trash dashes (see our group page on FB if any get scheduled) our next efforts occur on June 13 (collab with RCWA on the Sacramento River) and June 20 (Elk Grove Creek. We hope to hit the Bufferlands at the end of June - stay tuned. Do send ideas for future cleanups. EG Cleanup Chalkboard!!

On Sunday, May 31st , EGAT teamed up with our buddies, River City Waterway Alliance to return to the Bufferlands to continue our project to clean this nature preserve, a jewel of Sacramento we encourage people to visit when they have an open trail day. We fueled up on sweets, got an informative talk from Greg about why the Bufferlands is so important to preserve and then got to work. We had a great turnout and split into two teams

Anoop and Fabian crewed the trash barge with the support of Rudy and Gayle in the water with others lending support from the land. They gathered so many tires and debris that had flowed in from Morrison Creek.

Further upstream, Jeb and David put on their waders and sought out a debris dam, Khaliah in her waders supported Suzanne and others, including newbie Grant picked clean the fields and treeline.
Elena, Damian, and Aaron provided support to people in the water to pull out a heavy safe, half a boogie board, many tires and pallets.

All in all we had a very successful cleanup then refueled at In-N-Out thanks to our fiscal sponsor, The Sacramento Area Creeks Council. We look forward to returning.

David Irons, Khaliah Ingram , Jeb Crouson, and Kelly Bowdoin did a short trash dash on Sunday morning to remove Shopping Carts and bulk trash along Elk Grove Creek. 4 shopping carts found to add to the one removed by Rudy Garcia earlier last week. We also found a hot tub cover, pallets, two bicycle frames, and Kelly and Jeb removed one gallon sized trash bag of trash along the trail. We'll have to return once the creek is dry for a more thorough cleanup.

At the end of our cleanup we discovered a bunker someone had been digging under Elk Grove Blvd, potentually threatening the structural integrity of the road above and altering the flow of the creek which could lead to flooding. Our friends at EGPD responded to our report in under 24 hours and told us they will address the problem. Thank you EGPD for the prompt reply!

We'll have to return at a later date for the 2-3 shopping carts in the creek alongside the trail due Southeast of EGBlvd. Stay tuned!

Rural Trash and Bulky Cleanup Caravan 4.0, May 2, 2026
On May 2, what started as a simple re-bagging of items that were illegally dumped at a pullout section of Lambert Road turned into a full scale attack on hidden illegal dumping that was obscured by overgrowth, and had obviously been there for a long time.
18 volunteers diligently filled bag after bag of trash, pulled out huge items from vegetation and steep slopes while having FUN 🤩!
Conversation was lively as we chatted about finding a burnt boat, a rusted car frame, oodles of vhs tapes, clothing, snakes, tires, mattresses, appliance parts, TVs, motor oil, and that was just the first location and accompanying roadside.
We quickly moved on to the roadside near the jet ski (and skipped some of Lambert Road’s other areas). There we loaded the jet ski and a tire onto Anna’s trailer for transport to our second staging site under I-5. A few took turns posing with the jet ski 😂. Back at the roadside, volunteers continued pulling illegally dumped items from the shoulder and ditches of Lambert Road. This spot yielded more motor oil, tires, clothing, household items, goat heads, entertainment unit, a fake Christmas tree, and so very much more!
We know that the local residents and farmers appreciate the cleanup. It’s pretty bad out there especially in the ditches and brambles.
We sincerely appreciate the 55 volunteer hours donated by all who helped clear the roadway out in the South County. THANK YOU!
And a big welcome to two of our newest volunteers, Danny and Gabriel who smashed it at the cleanup. We hope to see them again soon! And Anna’s son who got the hang of everything so quickly! Thanks for joining us 😊
Meanwhile, while many of us were in the rural countryside, two of our regular trashers were cleaning up their own neighborhood.💚
David and Khaliah scooted out early to help at an Earth Day fair held at the Sacramento zoo. Thank you for supporting SACC at their booth alongside RCWA. Nicely done!

Aside from weekday trash dashes (see our group page on FB if any get scheduled) our next efforts occur on May 16 (Sheldon Park and Ride x East Stockton), May 23 (Freeport Bridge area), and May 31 (Bufferlands 18.0). Do send ideas for future cleanups. EG Cleanup Chalkboard!

Elk Grove is a strong community of caring people from all walks of life. We're proud of the success we've seen in making the city a cleaner place for critters to live with an environment of healthy creeks and fields and open space free of clutter and litter. Our organization works with Cub Scouts, Girl scouts, students, and businesses, and with the enthusiastic support of CCSD, and the City of Elk Grove we work to keep our city a great place to live.

A large part of our continued success has been thanks to our fiscal sponsor, The Sacramento Area Creeks Council, furnishes us with necessary tools, and pays for meals as a small thank you to our hardworking, merry volunteers who week after week remove litter and illegal dumping throughout the city.

We humbly ask for support for the Big Day of Giving to help keep our efforts going strong for our 100% volunteer group.
