Sorry we’ve been so quiet lately.
It’s not because nothing has been happening. We’ve just had our heads down working on STEAM Works.
Over the last few weeks we’ve been testing equipment, developing class ideas, working through projects, and building some of the systems we’ll eventually need to make all of this work.
We’re also still looking for the right permanent space in Elk City. We don’t have a building yet, and we’d rather find a place that actually fits what we’re trying to build than rush into a wrong one.
In the meantime, we don’t necessarily have to wait.
We’re looking at doing some pop-up classes and workshops so we can start putting projects in front of kids, see what works, and learn a few things ourselves before we open a permanent space.
At the heart of all of this is a pretty simple idea:
We want kids in our community to turn down jobs in STEAM fields because those careers don’t interest them... not because they never had the chance to understand them int he first place.
They should get to try this stuff. Build something. Take something apart. Write some code. Use a 3D printer. Work with electronics. Make art with technology. Mess something up and figure out how to fix it.
Then they can decide for themselves whether any of it is for them.
That’s also why we’re building STEAM Works around three levels:
Explorer - learn the tools and the basics.
Innovator - use those tools to build, experiment, and solve problems.
Vanguard - combine skills, tackle harder projects, and work more independently.
The idea isn’t to just finish a class and start over next time. Kids build skills, gain experience, and earn the ability to do more.
I’ll also be working on the STEAM Works website soon. Once it’s up, we’ll start posting more information about classes, pricing, early sign-ups, what we’re working on, and how to get involved.
We’ve still got plenty to figure out. There isn’t a secret finished maker space hiding somewhere waiting for opening day.
But this thing is moving still, I promise.
Bright Minds. Bold Choices. Big Ideas.
