Tammy Williamson (Commander, North Carolina Veterans Council) sent me this invitation. Google tells me that 6% of the US population have served in the military and that only 1% of the population served in the active-duty military. Bladen County has a population estimated right at 30,000 with about 1900 (1655 Males, 247 females) falling into the broader veteran category. We have a voice, it may be a small voice, but it is a voice. Let's do something to make our voice heard.

The VOD/PP programs have made it to the schools and have had almost 40 views but thus far only one application is in progress. We still have a month to go, and I hope we get a few more motivated individuals to apply.

We set up our booth Friday afternoon at the Dublin Peanut Festival to see if we could get any new members and to raffle off 100 "silver" dollar coins. Bad weather blew all the tents down later that night. Leon and Gary showed up at daybreak on Saturday and set things back up again. Leon Grimes, Leroy Churchill, and Vincent Phillips manned the tent most of the day. Iris Lyons and I were down at Boiling Springs attending the District 5 meeting and weren't able to get back until well into the afternoon. We sold quite a few raffle tickets and just before the band shut down, the lead singer did the drawing and announced Jeff Grimes as the winner of 100 Dwight D. Eisenhower dollar coins! Thank you to everyone who helped make our day a success!

Veterans come out and watch your local high school team play. Veterans get free popcorn and a drink. The US Army Golden Knights will be jumping in the game ball and the world famous 82nd Airborne Division Chorus will have a member present to sing our National Anthem. Tickets are $8 at the gate but if you are a veteran 60 years old you can stop by the Bladen County Aging Division (Twilla Allen, Aging Administrator) at 608 McLeod St, Elizabethtown and pick up a free pass for all school sporting events!
Be sure to wear your veterans organization headgear to let everyone know that we are out there supporting our community!

Come out to the Dublin Peanut Festival tomorrow and stop by the VFW booth for a chance to win 100 GIANT dollar coins! We will be set up right behind the school and hope to see you there. All proceeds go toward supporting our community service efforts! The more tickets we sell, the greater the benefit to our community!

Monthly Meeting reminder.
The Bladen County Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Raymond W. Biglow, Post No. 8062 will hold its regular monthly meeting Thursday, September 17th at 7pm.
We are located at 109 Hill Street, Elizabethtown, North Carolina.
We will be discussing the fast-approaching Dublin Peanut Festival, District 5 meeting, and community service opportunities.

Persian Gulf War
The United States and a coalition of allies declared war on Iraq in 1991. During the one-month conflict, 23 Americans were captured, including two women. American POWs were eventually taken to Baghdad. The Iraqi government declared its intent to use the prisoners of war as human shields to thwart bombing missions over the city. Bombs did partially destroy a building which held the POWs. The threat of torture and actual physical abuse were common. Beatings with pipes and hoses, bursting eardrums with fists and electrical shocks with volts from car batteries were experienced by the prisoners. Fortunately, all 23 of the American POWs returned to the United States.
