NRCS/USDA Forester James Palmer conducted our annual forestry checkup. His first stop was a natural stand of staghorn sumac that we enhanced to support wildlife. We then showed James our recent tree stand improvement practice that generated many woodpiles for wildlife habitat.

It is always a privilege to walk Beckets Run Woodlands under the guidance of an experienced and highly qualified forest professional. We are grateful for the expertise and insight...thank you James.

Tree improvement efforts along Rt136 this summer. The road closure most of the summer provided us an opportunity to remove undesirable trees and invasive vines. Beneath this undesirable vegetation we were excited to find many native hickory seedlings that should now thrive. Raul was the happy 😊 tree trimmer and vine chopper while Janet was the unhappy 😭 litter picker. Both jobs could be full time positions along Rt136. Even so, we did make progress…yeah…a great summer it was! πŸŒ³πŸ’šπŸŒž

Brilliant late summer along Rt136. In addition to their beauty this wingstem, goldenrod, and ironweed are providing a late season source of nectar for bees and butterflies and will be a wonderful seed source for our winter birds.

Gray catbird forages on silky dogwood berries along Rt136. Late summer berries, like those in this silky dogwood, provide needed fuel for many migratory birds. This gray catbird was one of three we saw together friday morning (https://ebird.org/checklist/S268768807) indicating that these birds have gathered for migration. We also saw an eastern kingbird Friday morning for the first time this year; most likely a migrator on the move.

The silky dogwood was planted as a 4 inch seedling in 2016. If you plant it they will come...🌿🫐🐦

July 2025, SR136 roadside flowers.

The temporary road closure offers a unique chance to slow down, appreciate the beauty around us, and envision new possibilities. πŸ’πŸŒž

Early summer botanical check-up with botanist Jeff Polonoli.
It is always a privilege to have Jeff visit us. In addition to habitat assessments, Jeff educated us on the pretty flowering mock orange we found near Rt136. Mock orange is unfortunately non-native, but not very invasive. The arrowwood viburnum we planted as seedlings in 2020 are doing very well. And the native elderberry patch we pruned last year will have a bumper crop of berries this year. All is good!

Migrating warblers are enjoying plenty of food and shelter at Beckets Run Woodlands this spring.

Over the years we have documented 15 different warbler species here. And there are probably many more that visit us. Last week during a three day period our Merlin sound app identified a Canada warbler, but we could not verify it by sight or with a clean sound recording.

The Chestnut-sided warbler (Setophaga pensylvanica) in this photo enjoys the shelter, many insects and immature fruit provided by this black cherry tree. Black cherry trees host 450 species of insects providing a valuable food source for our wildlife.

Soon our birding efforts will be more focused on documenting breeding behavior...stay tuned.

Spring maintenance: removing downed or hazardous trees from the driveway.

Raul uses his directional felling skills to gently lay this large dead bird cherry tree between the native "tubed" oak and hickory saplings. The wind direction fit perfectly into his plan.

He did it...yeah... 🌳 πŸͺš πŸ’¨

Kathy Mayshar, friend and officer from St. Lucie Audubon Society, visited with us this morning. Kathy is a very knowledgeable birder so we planned to tour Beckets Run Woodlands and catalog birds with her. Well...when we learned that she and her husband Dave have a forest stewardship project of their own in Vermont the tour shifted to forest land management. What a great morning...they are a delightful couple and we love both topics; trees and birds...happy together. πŸŒ²πŸŒ³πŸ¦‰πŸ¦ƒπŸ¦

Allegheny CleanWays staff members Erica Pasquali and Lyssa Eberhardt evaluated our roadsides. Their group envisions "a clean, beautiful and safe county for everyone". We are completely aligned with that vision and appreciate their help with our roadside beautification programs. Thank you Lyssa and Erica for your time and insight!
