Trump’s actions send a strong message that under his administration, workers will be left unprotected by the federal government as corporate executives attempt to take even more control over our lives.

The Trump administration has announced a significant initiative to reduce the size of the federal government. On January 28, 2025, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) sent an email to federal employees offering a “deferred resignation program.” Under this program, employees who voluntarily resign by February 6 will receive approximately seven months’ salary and remain on the payroll until September 30, without any work obligations during this period.

This move is part of a broader effort to streamline federal agencies and enforce stricter standards of suitability and conduct among federal workers. The administration has indicated that while some agencies may expand, the majority are expected to downsize through restructurings and layoffs. Employees who choose not to participate in the buyout program may face uncertainties regarding their positions, including potential reclassification to “at-will” status, which allows for termination without prior notice or justification.

The American Federation of Government Employees has criticized the initiative, arguing that it pressures employees perceived as disloyal to leave and could lead to significant disruptions in essential services provided by the federal government.

If you are a federal employee affected by this development, it’s crucial to carefully consider your options and stay informed about any further communications from OPM or your respective agency.
