Reel Women

Reel Women Reel Women: for Real Women The idea came from a program the Elgin Police Department had a few years ago.

Reel Women: for Real Women was started in 2008 and is cosponsored by the Gail Borden Public Library and the Elgin Area American Association of University Women. At Reel Women we watch, and then discuss, newly-released, classic or documentary movies that relate to women's issues, have strong female roles, or that are directed by women. There, the PD social workers attempted to bring women, particul

arly those in abusive relationships or those that felt isolated from the community, to the police department to watch and discuss movies that related to women and their issues. The Gail Borden Library, which pays for two separate licenses to show movies, stepped up and offered the location and a night for the group. We average between 20-30 people, both men and women, for the group. New people attend on a regular basis and you do NOT need to be an AAUW member or a college grad to attend.

I see myself going to see some movies

"She Said," "Tár" and "Women Talking" exemplify the challenges of dramatizing a moment and a movement we’re still living through.

A-freaking-(wo)men

He sounds like an aging crank yelling at the kids to get off his grass. It also makes him sound like he's yelling at women to get off his screens.

This article both makes me very mad, yet a little relieved. That . That we can find more women-centric movies. That films should not just pass the Betchel Test, but actually give women names, roles, and power.

I don't want to hear "Well, times have changed." These men knew exactly what they were doing. They were abusing women for their own egos. They didn't care.

Women first interviewed by the directors behind ‘Allen v. Farrow’ say the comedy icon sexually harassed—and in at least one case, sexually assaulted—them with impunity. A special collaboration, including a mini doc, between ‘V.F.’ and the filmmakers.

Due to Coronavirus, and an abundance of caution, we are putting Reel Women on hiatus. Likely until Summer 2021. If there is an interest in doing something virtually, like watching online and then getting together to discuss, please let us know. But for now, we feel this is the safest option for our fans.

Heads up: as Gail Borden has cancelled all programs for March, we will reschedule our March film, Judy, for a later date. (Not Liza. Sorry, too tired).

The Elgin Green Expo is back and it is not too late to sponsor Expo. There are still a handful of tables available for this event, set for April 4 at the Centre of Elgin. Several thousand area residents attended this event in the past and we are expecting a great turnout again. Contact [email protected] or visit www.cityofelgin.org/earthmonth for a copy of the sponsorship/exhibitor letter and agreement.

The festival’s lineup may be approaching gender parity, but in the films themselves women still struggle—even Taylor Swift.
