It's been a busy few weekends with Red Knights AL 8 and Iron Angles Winston County, and we aren't done yet. We completed 2 turkey shoots and bought some toys for the local FOP and delivered those toys today. Dec 20th, this coming up weekend from 2 pm to 6 pm at the Double Springs Municipal Building, will be our potluck fundraiser for one of our local Heros Heath Lewis. We encourage everyone to come out and enjoy some food and family time with our family. To eat it will be a donation with all proceeds going to Heath. Food donations will be welcomed as well. A small list of things that we have will be as follows. Hashbrown casserole, corn dip, Smoked Chicken legs and thighs, smoked turkey and ham, Deer chili, goulash with onions and cornbread, tortellini soup and much more. We appreciate all the support ahead of time and can't wait to see everyone.

Firefighters have always been about being fast. What's the fastest way from one floor to the next? Fireman's pole, or firepole, as it is more commonly referred to!

The story goes that the firepole was invented by David Kenyon in the 1870's. Kenyon was a captain of Engine Company No 21, an all black fire engine company in Chicago. Since horses were being used to pull steam engines at this time, it was very common for firehouses to have spiral stair cases so the horses would not go into the upper levels of the station in the event that they were out of their stalls. While this solved one problem, it created another, it took a decent amount of time to go down spiral stair cases (every second counts in an emergency).

In many fire stations, including Engine Company No 21, the hay for the horses would be kept at the very top floor. One of the tools often used for loading of the hay was an extremely long pole. One one occasion, Kenyon observed Fire fighter George Reid use this pole to quickly travel from the very top floor where the Hay was being stored to the ground floor to respond to the call. Kenyon was both impressed and inspired and received permission to create a permanent pole. At first this was met with many jokes but as Engine 21 was often the first to arrive on scene, the idea caught on.
