Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6174, Eldridge, IA presented a $1000 donation to Anonymously Grateful, whose mission is to raise awareness of the many challenges faced within our military/veteran community. Anonymously Grateful is also dedicated to honoring Gold Star Families and Gold Star Parents who lost loved ones in service to our country, while also providing veterans with resources and support for the battles veterans continue to face after returning home.

Across military occupations, infantry troops had the highest number of su***des in 2024, according to the Pentagon’s latest su***de report.

The Annual Report on Su***de in the Military was released Tuesday and marks the first time that the Department of Defense has broken down su***de numbers by military occupation. The job-specific data was included as a new requirement set by Congress.

In the 2024 calendar year, the report found, infantry troops had the highest number of su***des: 49 total across active and reserve forces. The report combined both Army and Marine data for infantry and other combat arms, including combat engineers, artillery and gunnery, and air crew positions. Collectively, those job categories had “higher-than-average su***de risk” after adjusting data for age and s*x factors, according to the report. The Pentagon found that the su***de rate for these jobs was 35.7 per 100,000 service members, compared to the total active duty rate of 23.2 per 100,000 troops.

“No other occupation group had a substantively higher or lower su***de risk than their respective population average,” according to the report. “No occupation appeared to have a higher risk for su***de compared to the U.S. population.”

The Pentagon revealed similar trends in a 2024 report to Congress, which found that many combat arms roles, including infantry, explosive ordnance disposal, and combat engineer troops, died by su***de at higher rates compared to other jobs.
