One School at a Time

One School at a Time One School at a Time boosts the performance and quality of rural schools in Uganda, Africa. Our approach is community-based.

One School works closely with stakeholders in rural Uganda to improve educational opportunities at selected local community schools.

We want to celebrate every single person who supported One School at a Time on this 18 year journey! Just look at what we accomplished together: 9 Ugandan schools now have basic infrastructure (clean water, latrines, hand washing stations etc); students eat lunch there because of school farm programs; older girls have the menstrual hygiene supplies they need to attend school with dignity; and these schools have small school-based businesses to generate much needed cash.

“If the only prayer you said was thank you, that would be enough.” Meister Eckhart

Girls at our 7 Ugandan partner schools need support so they can manage their menstruation AND attend school. In June 2021, 400 older girls received menstrual cups and trainings. A year later, because of demand, 1SAT added 200 more girls to the program. 87% of these 600 girls are still using their menstrual cups. They now have a sustainable way to manage their menstruation as these cups last 10 years. Other benefits? There is no waste to dispose of and the cup is easy to clean and dry. One School at a Time is closing at year end, but we are so happy that these 600 girls now have the support they need to stay in school!

We wish you and your family good health, hope, gratitude and peace on this Thanksgiving Day!. Your great generosity to us is the reason we do the work we do. The work that is changing the trajectory of the lives of children in rural areas of Kassanda district-Uganda. We couldn't be more thankful to have you be part of our journey . .

Celebrating Molly, 1SAT Field Office Manager. Molly must walk great distances to each of the 7 Ugandan partner schools to provide liquid soap trainings. The Ugandan government has established a lock down of Kassanda District (where we work) because of the recent surge in Ebola. Normally, Molly would be getting a ride on the 1SAT motorcycle driven by Brian, 1SAT security guard. But touching is not permitted (ebola is spread through contact with blood and bodily fluids). Thank you Molly and 1SAT team for your hard work and dedication in the face of such tremendous challenges!

The Ugandan government has extended its closure of Kassanda and Mubende Districts (1SAT work area) through Nov. as there was another surge of ebola infections. Government health officials have been providing safe burial practices for people who have died of the virus. Unfortunately, sometimes these safe practices do not meet the needs of mourning families. Recently, one family in Kassanda District decided to rebury their loved one, as they wanted to wash and drape the body themselves. Sadly, this resulted in new cases of ebola. And throughout all of this, the 1SAT team valiantly continues to provide trainings at the 7 partner schools in menstrual health management as well as the making of liquid soap. Given that motorcycles are not permitted to carry passengers, our Field Office Manager, Molly Nabwami, must walk to each of the schools, many over 6 to 10 miles away.
Be safe Molly and 1SAT team!
