Eldon Garden Club has been BUSY! Our biggest event this month was hosting the FGCM Central District Meeting - it’s sort of a big deal!

Our theme was “Discover the Wonder of the Great Outdoors” which was reflected in decor, treats, and our speaker made a presentation introducing our guests to Official Wonderland Camp!

As always, the meeting is about the business happening within the District. Betty Conley, Central District Director lead us through the agenda. Special guests were Tanya Stanley, FGCM President and Diane Neterer, FGCM 1st Vice President. (FGCM stands for Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri)

In keeping with our camping theme, Mike Clayton spoke about Official Wonderland Camp located near Rocky Mount, MO. People with different disabilities and needs can come spend time enjoying all kinds of activities and experiences. Many campers come back year after year.

MAY YARD OF THE MONTH

Spring is well underway! Eldon is bursting with color; buds and blooms are popping up everywhere.

Congratulations to Mark Cochran at 12 Prospect Road, Eldon! He has a good start at his home, I see mulch waiting to be applied. Along with interesting accents among the plantings, the grass is perfectly groomed and plantings will be extra special as they mature.

15 years has come and gone since we started our Planting Community Pride project - our biggest fundraising event of the year! (I think it’s here to stay.)

We take orders late February then send them off to our grower the first week of March. By the end of April, we have the best, the healthiest, the prettiest annuals, hanging baskets, containers. . .

This year for America’s 250th Anniversary we were able to offer patriotic pots. Blue pots, filled with red, white and blue flowers along with an American flag. The red geraniums are not blooming yet, but boy when they do!!

Yesterday was the day we called it a wrap for 2026. You might have seen us zooming around town delivering orders. 😉 It’s always a flurry of activity with plenty of laughter, fun, and occasional strong breezes, so plenty of chasing papers and stuff around. By the end of the day, we’re all ready for a good soak in a hot bath. 😂

A major thank you to our volunteers who pitch in every year ~ Chris Webery pulls the trailer loaded with all the beauty; Debbie Guthrie, Maxwell Vernon and Melissa O’Guin help with everything and anything else!

Last but certainly not least - THANK YOU to Sacred Heart Church for allowing us to take over your pavilion, parking lot and restrooms for the whole day! Without your generosity we could not pull this off!

Are you READY? Are you SURE? Are you EXCITED? . . .
Everything looks good for flowers coming in THURSDAY!!!!🌸🌼🌺

It takes a little while to sort and pull orders but we’ll be running the streets with deliveries and ready to load those orders that requested pickup. 🥰

SEE YOU SOON!

Every year for many, many, many, years Eldon Garden Club has teamed up with fourth graders from Eldon Upper Elementary to hand out saplings for them to plant and care for. They learn about the importance of trees in the environment and how to care for and grow the saplings. My own kids were given saplings to grow in the early 1980s.

The saplings are provided by Missouri Department of Conservation; this year they provided Redbuds. The saplings come to us “bare root” with “some” soil and moss, we spray the them with water and wrap them in a wet paper towel. We then put them in a plastic bag and include a card with instructions on how to plant and care for them. We deliver them to the Upper Elementary not too long before school is dismissed for the day so the kids can get them home safely.

Our other annual Arbor Day project is planting a tree in one of the City Gardens we maintain. Last year we planted a Red-leaf Redbud in one of the entrance beds to the city cemetery. It wasn’t too healthy to start with and the weather wasn’t settled yet . . . we lost it. We don’t give up easily, so this year we’ve got a healthier tree and the weather is more settled.

UPDATE!

I promised photos of the trees we planted through the Green Tree Partnership Grant. You can learn more at http://www.cepc.net.

Our club maintains the landscaping at the Caboose and it needed some TLC. Joan Eads wrote the application ~ and guess what? We won the maximum grant amount of $500! Old gnarly trees were removed, bushes were shaped up, 2 new Aborvitae trees are already purchased and planted. Believe me, they are being babied through the winter.

Our grant was awarded through Three Rivers Electric Cooperative.
We are very appreciative, THANK YOU SO MUCH! It is beautiful!
