This will be a big year for changes at Limeledge, as our grant to establish the Brookside Community Environmental Education Center allows us to work on getting signage up, restoring the barns, and of course continuing the extensive cleanup efforts that were necessary after purchasing the property in 2024.

First step: installing the welcome sign at the Brookside entrance next to Carpenter's Brook!

Woodlanders is the source of many of our plants, especially rare southeastern U.S. natives that are not offered anywhere else. They are also treating species of conservation concern with special attention, and will be sharing one such species with Limeledge and other sites later this year to get a better handle on its performance in cultivation. More on that later!

For now, putting this on the radar for those of you who love rare plants, and especially rare southeastern U.S. native plants that are (or might be) cold-hardy up here in the Finger Lakes region. Kudos to the new owner, Fiona von Grey, for keeping this amazing nursery open!

The bold foliage of monkeytail hornbeam (Carpinus fangiana) is one of the most noteworthy features of this rare plant. The long fruit clusters in fall are another, and are the source of the unusual common name.

To our knowledge, completely untested in our region. Coming soon to Limeledge for assessment.

It's a girl! Cartrema americana 'Woodlander's Amanda' is an extremely rare variegated cultivar of American devilwood with yellow-splashed leaves. This broadleaf evergreen is not well-known, despite being native to the U.S. East Coast and having a reputation for being shockingly cold hardy, supposedly to USDA Zone 5. Although it makes an excellent foliage plant, this species has very tiny flowers. Formerly classified as an Osmanthus, a genus grown for flowers and fragrance, this likely explains its relative obscurity.

A dioecious species, male and female flowers occur on different plants. Always fun to grow these rarities and confirm details like gender! This plant was brought inside to get an early start to the season, and will be destined for the Brookside Area at Limeledge. Big thanks to Wayne Paquette for sharing. Come see it this year at Limeledge!
