Catch 22 Peer Support

Catch 22 Peer Support Peer support for veterans. Don't let life's obstacles stop you from living the life you want. Why does the government make this so hard?

https://www.paypal.com/biz/fund?id=ZTYD3JXLSZZCS

I find it appalling that military and veteran suicide rates are at a level that is, to me, epidemic! I find it even more appalling that our government appears to be “going through the motions” to take action. I commend those veteran organizations and individuals that have taken this to heart. Do we need high- level conferences and studies to see th

e problem? The mission of Catch 22 Peer Support is to interact with our heroes, to have a dialogue with them, and to help them find the resources that will enable these men and women to live the life they want to live. I hope that all who read this will support the mission of catch 22 Peer Support. Let’s work together to save the lives of those who have given so much. I personally thank everyone who will support this worthy cause!

THU, 4 JUN 2026
PTSD Awareness Month
"Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may develop in some people after extremely traumatic events, such as combat, a terrorist attack, a crime, an accident, or a natural disaster.
People with PTSD may relive the trauma in painful recollections, flashbacks, or recurrent dreams or nightmares; avoid activities or places that recall the traumatic event; or experience physiological arousal, leading to symptoms such as an exaggerated startle response, disturbed sleep, difficulty in concentrating or remembering, and guilt about surviving the trauma when others did not."
We need to try to learn about PTSD, to try to understand, and to be able to offer support to those who experience it. PTSD is not something you can "shake off"; it is real.
PTSD symptoms can be controlled. There is hope, there is help.

PTSD Awareness Month
Symptoms
Matthew Tull, Ph.D., writes:
"Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs after a traumatic event and interferes with a person's ability to function. You may wonder if you or someone you care about has PTSD, and whether you need to get professional help. If you are experiencing symptoms of PTSD, it is important to see a doctor so that you can get the right diagnosis and treatment."
Tull discusses PTSD symptoms based on the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5).
*Intrusive memories
*Nightmares
*Flashbacks
*Prolonged distress after a trigger
*Increased heart rate
*Avoidance
*Mood changes
*Aggressive behavior
*Hypervigilance
*Sleep issues
If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms for more than a month, it is time to see a professional. There is no shame in asking for help. It is a sign of strength. There is help, there is hope. Support groups are an excellent way to connect with others who have had similar experiences.

TUE, 2 JUN 2026
PTSD Awareness Month
June is PTSD awareness month.
Some facts about PTSD:
Eight percent of the population, or up to 8 out of every 100 people, will have PTSD symptoms manifest at some point in life.
Approximately eight million adults have PTSD during any given year.
About 10%, or 10 of every 100 women, will manifest symptoms of PTSD in their lifetime, a higher incidence than for men. Approximately 4 of every 100 men will have PTSD at some stage in life.
Military service puts veterans and currently serving military members at an elevated risk of experiencing or witnessing trauma.
Combat is not the only cause of PTSD symptoms. Any trauma may result in PTSD, including sexual assault, sexual harassment, and related issues. 23% of military women report sexual assault during their career in uniform.
First responders are also at risk for developing PTSD.
PTSD may manifest itself over time. You may not recognize the symptoms as being PTSD-related at first, or without the help of someone trained to spot the warning signs.

SUN, 31 MAY 2026
Mental Health Awareness Month
As we close out the month, I thought I would share this post from Facebook memories. The numbers and statistics have changed, but the message remains relevant.
Su***de does not discriminate-
Within the military family, both active and veteran sides, su***de claims more lives, and the numbers are rising. The Washington Post published an article entitled "Su***de takes more military lives than combat, especially among women"
The writer of that article, Petula Dvorak writes "Su***de has been the main killer of U.S. personnel since the Sept. 11 attacks. More than 30,000 of them have died by their own hands since, during a period that saw about 7,000 service members die in combat or training exercises, according to a project from Brown University.
Su***de in the military community is at its highest rate since 1938, according to a Department of Defense report released last month.
Increasingly, those killed are women.
In 2020, they accounted for 7% of military su***des - up from 4% a decade earlier, according to Department of Defense numbers. About one in six servicemembers is female."
Su***de is preventable. Check on your buddy.

SAT, 30 MAY 2026
Mental Health Awareness Month: Purpose.
Having a sense of purpose helps us to have optimism, resiliency, and hope. These can help our physical and mental health. What is your sense of purpose? You may have a satisfying career, your family / social life may be great, but you still feel like something is missing. There are steps you can take to fill that void. Maybe it is helping others. You can donate your time, money, or talent to help others. To find your sense of purpose, consider things that interest you and find a cause that you are passionate about. What do you "love" to do?
Psychology Today tells us that "Purpose opens opportunities. This information can awaken us to define goals and ideals that are personally meaningful and reach beyond ourselves in some way to progressively define our existence. Purpose does not have specific definitions or boundaries. Whether we experience a sense of purpose as a volunteer, receptionist, carpenter, teacher, maintenance worker, parent, or physician does not matter: It is having a sense of purpose that matters.".

Mental Health Awareness Month
As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, we need to remember to practice self-care all year long. The summer season is approaching, and for many, that means vacations, road trips, and outdoor activities. When you make plans for these, be sure to include some time for yourself so that you can enjoy your time.
Try to avoid those things that can trigger you. Remember your support system, and include time for you.

WED, 27 MAY 2026
Mental Health Awareness Month:
Suppression and Repression.
We have defense mechanisms to help us cope. These two are similar defense mechanisms:
"Suppression is a useful psychological mechanism; here we force the unwanted information out of our awareness. We consciously choose to not indulge in a conscious thought, feeling, or action even though we are aware of it. This permits us to focus on our affairs without being distracted by every impulse that arises, and without having to act on those impulses.
Repression, also known as dissociative amnesia, is similar to suppression, but it involves unconsciously forgetting or blocking some unpleasant thoughts, feelings, and impulses. Individuals might use repression to become unconscious of traumatic past memories. "
Basically, we can use suppression to help us put off something until there is a better time to deal with it. Repression is when we forget something and do not deal with it. We need to learn how to cope with a stressful or disturbing thought before it causes negative behaviors.
