Yesterday, 1/24/25, our towplane tried its first full load of UL94 avgas. Two of our senior towpilots flew multiple tows and reported that they could tell no difference in performance between UL94 and 100LL. Although one day is not enough for a definitive evaluation, our pilots were pleased with the results. The true test will be later this summer, with long, hot, high tows and high density altitudes.
The investigation into UL94 was necessary because our long time fuel supplier will no longer deliver avgas to Kelly Air Park. Due to the high compression pistons in our Pawnee and the high density altitudes we experience, mogas is not an option.
As far as we know, we're the first glider club to experiment with the new alternative fuel.
