Here is some information that we have learned over the past couple of weeks regarding the 5 player limit placed on baseball by the IHSAA over the summer months.

The IHSAA has been flooded with emails and other forms of communication and has encouraged Indiana Legion baseball representatives (and possibly others) to attend a meeting in October to discuss a potential solution. Indiana Legion baseball officials feel positive about discussions up to this point and have the support of members of the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches.

Let’s consider this information to be positive at this moment and in several weeks we hope to share even more once the results of this meeting are known.

By now, many of you are aware of the new IHSAA rule that limits baseball participation to 5 players from the same school participating on a team into and through the summer. This was previously a rule only during the school year. Indiana American Legion Baseball will be fighting this new limitation as it will impact and hinder many Legion posts around the state, especially us. News on this topic will be updated here as it becomes known. The best action any of our supporters can take is to contact the IHSAA by email and let the commissioner and assistant commissioners know about the destruction this decision could have on community sponsored baseball.

To wrap up our seasons, there are more than a few recognitions and mentions of gratitude that need to be made despite the fear of leaving somebody out. Here is a list:

1. Elberfeld American Legion Post 351 officers and members for giving us permission to operate our teams under their post.

2. Every player who wore a uniform at some point this season. You were a part of history over 60 years in the making and whether you’ll play baseball again or not, we hope you made memories, friends, and can take something that you learned and carry it forward.

3. Every parent who agreed to support their player and our mission including concessions and gate duty

4. Everyone who supported us during our shotgun and BBQ fundraisers and attended our games

5. Kent Kleiman & First Rate Real Estate, JZ Plumbing, The Dugout, Bekaert, Roth’s Pizzeria, and Oasis Massage Studio for their generous donations

6. Tecumseh High School administration and WCSC officials for letting us use the nice baseball facility at THS as our home field

7. Coaches Kevin Pfeiffer, Marcus Oxley, and Gordon Wood for their leadership, guidance, and wisdom shared with our players. That’s a lot of volunteer hours spent in hot and sweaty conditions for a bunch of old guys. Their contributions are immeasurable!

8. Lydia Wilson and Taylor George for announcing our home games and keeping the scoreboard and Zak Ours for keeping GameChanger many times for our Junior team.

9. Ashley Hazelip and Kristi Pfeiffer led our fundraising efforts and the concessions and bathroom stocking. This season doesn’t happen without them. The amount of time spent on this team by those two can’t be calculated. It was mentioned more than once by opposing teams and umpires that our teams and home games were so organized, especially for a first year team. THANK YOU

A Junior team that finished with a winning record and state qualifier, and a Senior team whose record did not reflect the competitiveness. Both teams earned respect of teams around the state with our play and conduct.

SENIOR LEGION STAT LEADERS
We played really tough competition and still had several players put together a solid season, especially pitching and defensively. As followers of our team know, we pitched well much of the time, defended well almost always, but averaging just over two runs per game makes it tough to win. It’s important to post our stat leaders publicly so our players can be praised by our community and family. It also might make the high school coaches who have completely disconnected from their players outside of their season aware that these guys are playing a high level of baseball either for fun, to improve, or both, and show some of their capabilities against competition that is tougher than high school. We have chosen the most traditional stats to make public, though some argue a couple of these are outdated, everyone is familiar with them. Of these, the most important stat to a coach is the games played, especially with all of the conflicts and vacations that occur over the summer. Thanks to Taylor, Alec, Liam, and Blake for playing in every game, putting in the work, and finishing the grind.

JUNIOR LEGION STAT LEADERS
When high school-aged players participate on teams that play strong competition, it’s important to recognize the players’ accomplishments and statistical leaders publicly. You never know who views the stats; perhaps a college coach who starts keeping an eye on those players as their playing career continues. The traditional major stat categories were chosen, but the most important stat to the program (from a coach’s eye) is the four players who showed up to every game and put in the time. A little extra “pat on the back” to Levi, Cale, Erik, and Easton for the dedication 💪🏻 Great job to all players, especially those who appear on our leader boards.

Our season ended today with a 8-1 loss to Crawfordsville in the regional semi-final. We competed with effort and represented ourselves well. The best compliment was from the Terre Haute tournament director when he said, “Your team was fun to watch and they hustled. We didn’t think you were going to be a very good team, but you proved us wrong. You played like you belonged here and competed.”

We battled and battled and battled some more until after midnight. After over 5 hours, 10 innings, two long lightning delays of well over two hours, we came up short. Some of it was just playing a tough team and some of it was just not being able to get out of our own way. Proud of the effort, that’s for sure. Everyone knows we are here and who we are now. We will give it another shot later today.

*ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING OUR JUNIOR TEAM’S PARTICIPATION IN THE STATE TOURNAMENT*

After more than 60 years, Post 351 returned to baseball and was able to field a junior and senior team, with our junior team just qualifying for the state tournament following regional play. Being landlocked by other legion programs, we are only able to draw from two small public schools of under 300 students, Tecumseh and Wood Memorial. Everyone we play draws from more schools and all of them larger than ours, so being able to compete with them and beat them is an accomplishment! Having one team, let alone two (a Senior team, too), is quite a credit to both school communities and the few players outside of those schools who wanted to play for us and got released from their legions. There’s a lot going on; HS football workouts and scrimmages, late family vacations, and some travel baseball. Due to those conflicts and the size of our small roster, we have declined the bid to participate in the Junior state tournament. Our team finishes with a winning season at 8-7.

This doesn’t take away from what we have done; we are just out of bodies and out of energy. Our junior team represented itself, its community, and its legion proudly, and wants to thank everyone who supported us through fundraisers and coming to games to cheer us on.

The Senior team plays in the regional on Thursday in Terre Haute vs Speedway Post 500. We will have updates on our results.
