That’s a wrapped on HGS Freedom School 2026! We completed our 2026 series with a record-breaking attendance at Macedonia Baptist Church in Daphne where we built community, learned about local civil rights history, examined gerrymandering in Alabama (Gomillion v. Lightfoot) and challenged our thinking through visual art (Amy Sherald) and poetry (Langston Hughes’ “Let America Be America Again,” and Ashley M. Jones’ “All Y’all From Alabama).

It was truly our honor and pleasure to learn with our Freedom School communities this year—Elba, York, Daphne…we love you and can’t wait to come back!

Finally, a special thank you to Alabama Humanities Alliance for their continued gracious support of Higher Ground Society’s efforts. We are forever fans of what you do in Alabama!

“Where two or three are gathered…”

We had an AMAZING time engaging in dialogue with York/west Alabama residents this past Saturday. Our discussion(s) covered it all—voting rights, local civic engagement and elections, our elders’ hope for the future, York’s racial and economic history, the impact of federal activity on rural locales, the role of the arts in liberation work—you name it. This Freedom School session really drove home the importance of bringing community together to dream of a brighter future.

Thank you to our wonderful hosts, Coleman Center for the Arts, for rolling out the red carpet and offering a tour of their incredibly impressive multi-building complex across downtown York. You are a tremendous asset to your community!

‼️ West Alabama! 🗣️ We’re headed your way!

Join us in York at Coleman Center for the Arts as Auburn University associate professor of History, Dr. David Carter leads us in exploring the rich history of Black Americans’ struggles to access the ballot box from the Reconstruction era to the present, touching briefly on the experiences of other marginalized groups who fought for the right to vote both in the United States and elsewhere around the world. We will discuss how these hard-won gains have been threatened in recent decades, culminating in the effective gutting of federal protection of voting rights in the last fifteen years by politicians and the Supreme Court. We’ll touch on the histories of well-known voting rights activists like Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King Jr., Ella Baker, Fannie Lou Hamer, Diane Nash, and John Lewis, but also remember the vital contributions of lesser-known individuals, organizations, and institutions. The workshop will feature opportunities for small-group discussion and a wealth of multimedia materials. Don’t miss out on this chance to be a part of something special.
