COVID19 has kept me away from Elaine. Looks like I am stuck in Fayetteville for a while. We have been fortunate to have a small grant to build a door directly into our park. the tornado in Helena has made construction help limited. We also will have a grant to do some shopping and cooking activities when we can be together again. Thankfully, Ora can watch over things even though we cannot meet with the students at Lee Street Community Center. For my 70th birthday, I am doing a fundraiser on Facebook for the Lee Street Community Center. It will keep our nonprofit afloat and give us funding when we can be together again.

I need to take a trip to Elaine to see what has happened to birdhouses after the recent storm. We have over 700 birdhouses displayed, but it keeps changing. We use windows of old buildings, and some of the are not reliable. Three of the buildings we use have partially caved in roofs. We may be asked to move birdhouses at any moment. That's why a storm can make a big difference.

In 2020, we will give away (or taking donations for) a lot of birdhouses, keeping ones that make the most interesting displays.

We are looking for a building to rent or buy to make some permanent displays. We don't need heating/AC, water, or even a roof without any leaks. It would be great to have just the front 15 feet of some of the oldest buildings. It would cost the owners a fortune to tear down the rest because of asbestos.

Looking forward to seeing friends in Elaine.

We are so busy, we haven't been to our Facebook lately. In a month, we will be having a service for the centennial of the 1919 racial violence in Elaine. Turning Point Park has new signs to help reflect on the past and move on to the future.
We are getting a new musical instrument and putting up lots of birdhouse displays. We have painting projects for our children to do.
We just started a Go Fund Me account. I'm hoping I did it all right. Technology still frustrates me. It's titled "Let the Children In."

If you are in the Fayetteville area on Saturday, October 27, I will be doing activities to help fund activities in Elaine. We'll also be letting children make 3 foot wide bats for free. There will be a bake sale, seasonal sale and a small rummage sale. The time is 11 - 5 at Rolling Hills Baptist Church, 1400 Rolling Hills Drive.

Wish I could keep up with this, but these activities for the Lee Street Community Center keep me busy even when I am not in Elaine. We will be participating in the International Day of Peace for 3 days, September 20 - 22. Please write [email protected] for information on attending or for ways you can help.

Finally I will get to see Elaine next week. It will be brief but will include a longer stay the second week of May.

The Lee Street Community Center in Elaine is located in the poorest part of Arkansas. It was a prosperous town until the mechanization and conglomeration of farming. Ten years ago the school was closed. Students return home after a long bus ride to few positive activities. It is difficult to raise money for nonprofits in the delta.

A Fayetteville resident is on the board of directors for the nonprofit. Events are planned to raise funds in NW Arkansas. Giving Tuesday, November 28, is a national day of giving. Anyone can go to and donate to the Lee Street Community Center in Elaine.

Local activities are Monday night from 5 - 8 at Razorback Pizza in Farmington and Tuesday night from 5 - 8 at Razorback Pizza on Razorback Road from 5 - 8. Come learn about he town, activities with children the birdhouse project, our civil rights park, and the 1919 massacre that may have been the worst racial violence in our country's history. Donations may be made for a chance to win 1/3 of the money pie!

We are so busy with activities in Elaine and trying to find funds to keep them going that this page is certainly neglected. You can see some of our birdhouses and TURNING POINT PARK by going to "Exploring Arkansas" on-line and look for the August shows.
We think we will be on KARK in Little Rock on Tuesday, November 7.
AND speaking of Tuesday, please add us to your list of organizations you might want to give to on GIVING TUESDAY, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. We are listed as the Lee Street Community Center in Elaine, Arkansas.
