The El Segundo Chamber lost a long time Board Member this week. Carl Jacobson served on our Board for many years. He was a great champion of our business community while balancing the needs and care of our residents. He was a walking history book who we relied on to help guide our advocacy and commitment to El Segundo. We are grateful for the years he gave to our community and thank his family for sharing him with us. We are all better for having known Carl and having him in our lives.
Today, we remember Carl Jacobson, a longtime El Segundo resident of more than 55 years who served as mayor from 1988 to 1996 and again from 2012 to 2013. He was an esteemed member of the community who dedicated much of his life to public service and to making El Segundo a special place for generations of residents.
Jacobson served on the City Council for 24 years, spanning four decades. His commitment to El Segundo began in the 1970s, when he joined the Aviation Safety & Noise Abatement Committee. He later served on the boards of the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce and the Automobile Driving Museum.
Throughout his years of public service, Jacobson was known for his dedication to El Segundo and his belief in the importance of civic involvement. He gave his time and energy to organizations and causes that helped strengthen the community and improve the quality of life for its residents. He and his wife, Nancy, were also actively involved with the El Segundo School District’s Parent Teacher Association and Girl Scouts and Nancy continues this legacy through her involvement in many local charitable organizations.
In 2007, Jacobson was named El Segundo’s Citizen of the Year in recognition of his longstanding contributions. A decade later, in 2017, Lairport Drive was re-dedicated as Carl Jacobson Drive to honor his many years of service to El Segundo.
Throughout his life, Jacobson spoke openly about his love for the community and often described El Segundo as wonderful place to live, raise a family, and build lasting connections. His children grew up in El Segundo and continued to make the city their home, raising families of their own.
The City honors Carl Jacobson with gratitude for his decades of service to El Segundo. His civic involvement, community spirit, and devotion to the city have left a lasting legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
