🌞 Harnessing the power of the sun!
Nature Explore campers spent the week exploring different ways people use the sun—creating sundials to tell time, experimenting with solar-heated water, and cooking with solar ovens. After each day of hiking and exploring, they returned to Base Camp to enjoy sun-cooked treats, including chile, potatoes, and even cupcakes! 🧁🤩

June 10, 1996

30 years ago today was the first day of Field Institute of Taos. We spent the day exploring in Taos Ski Valley with a small, enthusiastic group of 6 and 7 year olds. It was a moment filled with small adventures in the forest. A cloud came over in the afternoon and we laughed and frolicked as it snowed on us while we were walking down the Return Trail. There was so much excitement and joy as we played in the dirt, looked at rocks and clouds, followed animal tracks, listened to the sounds around us, hiked, made friends, and created memories. None of us could have dreamed this was the beginning of such an epic adventure in learning, growth, and building community.

Over the 30 years, many FIT traditions have evolved, thanks to the inspiration of the thousands of children who have shared their perspectives and joined us to play outside. We still focus on fun, observation, connection, and conservation through active, hands-on adventures. We still visit Secret Spots, play camo, and adapt to interests, weather, and group dynamics. I am personally grateful for each and every child, parent, leader, guest presenter, donor, and Board member as you have each had a role in creating the magic of the FIT experiences. I am grateful to this beautiful place with so much cultural and natural diversity on so many levels. I am grateful to everything that came before and led us to the moment FIT was born, to all we have today as we continue to be honored to spend time adventuring with so many children, and to everything that will come in the future.

I can’t wait to celebrate 30 years at FIT Base Camp on August 15th with as many of our past campers, families, and staff as possible!

Thank you all for being part of this journey.
