She was constantly staying near the fish market and watching people come to buy fish. She took a leaf that fell from the tree and came to the owner. On the first day, surprised, he took her "money" and gave her a fish. From that day on, every morning she comes with a leaf to "buy" fish.

Walking among Giants

As the deciduous leaves start to fall in lowlands, veterans young and old were treated to a glimpse of their possible future. Fellowshipped by donations coming from Sunrise Rotary of Merced, U.C. Merced hosted the first of hopefully many seminars on Leadership and Education. As an founder of a ten year old organization that works towards solutions in the fight against the many causes of Veteran Su***de, the seminar was both a blessing and new beginning.

Veterans were required to apply and patiently wait for one of sixteen seats. The qualification process as I could see was not predicated on elitism. It was a mixture, of all branches of the Armed Services. Military Occupations or specialties were not considered and yet represented.

The guest speakers would normally be the stars; the ambience of a National Park with ties to the past, the Buffalo Soldiers, the NP Rangers and trees thousands of years old would be awesome in itself, but the Giants whom we walked with were all the above and the students, the Warriors who have sacrificed in so many ways.

The chosen few who were picked to attend had a common mantra “not worthy” the opposite of why they were chosen. They like so many other veterans are focused on any mission given, show up ahead of schedule, loyal to a fault, responsible beyond their years and humble for the most part. Don’t mistake their bravado for ego, they must keep up comrades in the humor and jabs of the day. We grew to respect each other. Where each came from, no matter the gender or culture never mattered, and didn’t this seminar. Once the four days and nights ended, we all gave promises to communicate and help each with our futures.

Names of Students, Instructors, and Guest Speakers are withheld pending permission. Everyone a Giant.

California is in turmoil. Not just political, but every conceivable way possible. The sanctuary burned down last July from the Ferguson Fire. Attempts to clean up the burn site have been slowed by weather, theft, safety concerns, highway closure and infrastructure repairs. It takes hours to get to the site, due to rock slides, mud slides and tree falls. Sometimes like yesterday, it was two hours once we hit the Grizzly gate to reach the camp. We are not allowed to heavy equipment on the wild side of the river so, it’s all work by hand, back and crow bar. Bigger fires took the spot light up north and south sucking the wind out of fundraiser for recovery. Slowly we cleaned up, still much to go but we are doing the best we can as good stewards of the Wild side. Canopies are used to shelter the wind, rain and snow while working. Yesterday we worked our way in to find two out three canopies were twisted and mangled as if a tornado had hit. Camp was tossed.

Even though a chill was present in the air, a seventy year old man and a twelve year worked feverishly to beat the setting sun. Weather permitting we can bring in a work crew in coming weeks. The things we do....

Thank you Aaron and Dustyn (two weeks ago) for helping an OG keep the dream alive.

Thank you to all that joined us at Trunk or Treat yesterday!! Another fun year!!!

This stand of Coastal (aka Valley) Oak show the scars of the Ferguson Fire, but are very much alive. The old Miners camp, called Green Cabin Flats is where the miners slept then headed out to various mines. No sign of a Green Cabin. As Veterans, Law Enforcement, Fire Fighters and First Responders we are using it again as a focal point of operations. As scars subside and the cool breeze no longer carry ash we will be good stewards of the history.

Road clearing was the priority of work yesterday; landslides, down trees, washout s(previous flooding) will be the stumbling blocks in going forward. Our 4x4 flat bed pickup is toast. Forward we will go. And yes repopulating flowers for soil conservation and the butterflies(Mariposas) is part of our forward thinking.

As CEO, I would to thank you for the kind comments, likes and support offered the past week. It helps my crew going forward, rebuilding from scratch.

If I can ask for a share, to get the story out, it will increase the odds of a quick recovery.

Again thanks for the kindness.
