Many times, people want to know what is meant by "fundamentalist" Christianity. The term has become more toxic due to the Global War on Terrorism. However, in Christian history, "fundamentalism" arose as a reaction to the new theology coming into mainline protestant seminaries and groups from Europe, mainly from the Tübingen School in Germany in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The conservative scholars and denominational leaders, who rose to defend the traditional faith of Christianity from the attacks upon the Bible and Christ, became known as "fundamentalists." Their theology became known as "Fundamentalist Theology." It was first published in 1917 in a series of essays and papers collected into seven volumes known as the Fundamentals.
