AUGUST 12, 2013 - From Cadet to USAFA Superintendent

On August 12, 2013, Lt. Gen. Michelle D. Johnson, USAF, Class of 1981, made history as the first woman to serve as Superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy, becoming the Academy’s 19th superintendent.

Johnson was no stranger to breaking barriers. As a cadet, she became the Academy’s first female Cadet Wing Commander and, following graduation, its first female Rhodes Scholar, earning a master’s degree in politics and economics from Oxford University.

A command pilot with more than 3,600 flying hours, Johnson served in airlift and air refueling operations and held commands at the squadron, operations group, and wing levels. Her career also included service as an Air Force aide to the President, senior assignments with the Joint Staff and U.S. Transportation Command, and service with NATO as Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Intelligence.

More than three decades after graduating as part of only the second Academy class to include women, Johnson returned to her alma mater to lead the institution responsible for developing the Air Force’s next generation of officers, adding another historic first to a career of distinguished service.
