Warning: deep thoughts on a Saturday morning.
I’m not posting this to start an argument, to criticize anyone, to change the world, but to share my thoughts as I’m processing them.
I’m spending part of the day on continuing education for immigration legal work. Do I know my rights and what they mean to every person who lives in the United States? What does our constitution provide for and to whom does it apply? They’re not just my rights but the rights of every person who lives in the United States.
It makes me appreciate the wisdom and courage of our founding fathers. They understood from personal experience how important individual’s rights are, and the dangerous truth that, if you say these rights are for EVERYONE, that means EVERYONE: the good, the bad, & the ugly (to quote famous philosophers Sergio Leone & Luciano Vincenzoni).
It’s the great conundrum of the Gospel: God’s love is for EVERYONE: the least of these, the worst of these, those who run away, those who embrace it, those who hate it, deny it, and swear against it. it’s for me & in accepting it for myself I cannot deny it to anyone else.
