“I’m completely opposed to detention centers on so many levels, on a human level, ethical, moral, our faith, we just don’t believe in that. The way we’re treating them, it’s just abhorrent,” EPISO leader Estella Padilla said at the meeting. “But on a practical level, we don’t have water, and we have several issues at our house. The most common one is the pressure.”

The same grassroots organizers who helped bring running water and sewer service to Socorro decades ago are back at work. Through local Catholic churches, residents are organizing against a planned ICE detention center, saying it could strain the community's water system while raising humanitarian concerns. The effort reflects how faith communities continue to shape civic activism in the Borderland.

For the past 3 months EPISO Leaders have been doing research with local experts to understand dust, water and energy in the El Paso region.
Join us for a Civic Academy on climate to learn more and continue the conversation around how climate is impacting us and our community.

What an incredible training yesterday! Leaders of all ages and backgrounds from across El Paso County came together to strengthen relationships, build power, and deepen their understanding of what it means to organize relationally.
