In celebration of Women's History Month, we are remembering Louise Dietrich, (1878-1962), an El Paso pioneer. Dietrich was a professional nurse, who was the founder of the Texas Graduate Nurses Association. She came to El Paso in 1902, riding on the same train as Buffalo Bill. On her way to California, Dietrich stopped in the city for a visit where she found an epidemic of typhoid fever raging. With only seven nurses in El Paso, she stayed to help. Making her home here, Dietrich in the early years rode a horse to visit patients, including those at the tuberculosis tent city at Highland Park. Dietrich went on to co-found the El Paso League of Women Voters in 1920 and served as the president of the Texas League in the 1930s.
